Idan Raichel is Amazing

Just wanted to say that a few months ago our poster Alli gave us a look at Idan. I ended up buying both of his CDs and think he’s great.

His first CD is damned good, but his new one is incredible. The first time I heard the Shoshana Damari song with which he ends the CD, I was in my car. I pulled over and listened to it two more times (while trying to enunciate the letters Aiin and Chet like she does). Amazing stuff. It also really brought me back to Israel.

Heck, if I had to go to a desert island and choose between Raichel and Einstein, it would probably be Raichel.

  1. No, the truly awesome song on that album is “B’Yom Shabbat.” I mean, sure, Jamaican Rastas throw in a lot of Amharic words into their songs, but B’Yom Shabbat has actual Amharic toasting over reggae. And it’s damned cool.

Although I gotta say, sometimes the rest of the album veers dangerously close to inoffensive world music type stuff…

  2. I really like From The Deep.

  3. Being a music snob, I thought it was a little too New Age…but I admit, it’s grown on me. Seen the video?

  4. Yes, I saw it.

One thing about music is that it’s so intensely personal that I don’t see how one can be a snob. For that reason alone I forgive ck for his unfortunate dislike of Arik Einstein.

  5. ooh i love idan reichel, especially byom shabbat, holler to michael above, but arik einstein is classic, he has priority

  6. dude….idan raichel is INCREDIBLE — listen to mimamakim — its amazing ….

  8. ok; it may semm funny but uis the pure true! For one of those amazing “coincidences” in our lives ( in mine is really amazing, I, one brazilian catholic mid age woman, lost in New York, found in a thrifty store one cd ( brand new never opened) of Idan Reichel; completly in Hebrew, language that I don’t understand to much beyond some of the letters of the Kaballah ( that I study by myself).Of course ILOVED THE CD – otherwise I wouldn’t be here losting my time! But I needs some help. They are already in my mp3, but when I made the conversion the software updated the musics for the name in english. So, that’s what I have now, and I NEED TO KNOW the letters of the musics, but one in special got my atention, the title is:
NEW YEAR GREETINGS”.that song plays so deep in me that I need to understand the words, so please somebody can help me with this?
Thank you very much, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!

  15. Hi everybody…
I fell in love with the cd of The Idan Raichel Project, I guess it’s called From the Depths or something like that. Well I have an Israeli friend and I asked her to give the cd. Now I’m constantly looking for the lyrics of Mima’amakim.
My major problem is I cannot read Hebrew but once I’ve found a website that had the lyrics not in Hebrew but with “letters”.
I still can’t understand but at least I can try to pronounce it! So if somebody knows a site (google didn’t help), PLEASE let me know!
    Thanks very much!

  16. Here is a link to a website that contains English language translations of three of Idan’s songs, including Mi’maamakim.

  21. From the Depths I call to you, Come to me
With your coming will return the light in my eyes
Not done, wont leave the touch of your hands
That will come and will lighten to the sound of your laughter.

From the Depths I call to you, Come to me
The moon opposite shall light your way to me
Spread out and melted in light of your hands touch
In your ear I whisper, I ask

Who calls to you tonight – Listen,
Who sings to you in voice – To your window
Who gives his soul so that you’d be happy
Who’ll lend a hand and build you a house

Who’ll give his life, lay it under you
Who as ashes to your feet shall live
Who will love you still from all your lovers
Who from any evil spirit shall save you
    From the Depths

From the Deep I call to you, Come to me
The moon opposite shall light your way to me
Spread out and melted in light of your hands touch
In your ear I whisper, I ask

Who is that who calls you tonight – Listen,
Who sings to you in voice – To your window
Who gives his soul so that you’d be happy
Who’ll lend a hand and build you a house

Who’ll give his life, lay it under you
Who as ashes to your feet shall live
Who will love you still from all your lovers
Who from any evil spirit shall save you

  24. I also discovered Idan Raichel and bought his 2cd’s after lending the 1st from a friend…

Are there other Israeli Artists that make this kind of ethnic/world music ?

I also like the melancholy in all the songs… happy & sad but it makes me feel very good :-) .

I’m a pianist, I’ll try to play some of his songs and put ‘em on youtube.

    cheers from Belgium Europe,
    Benjamin

    • Hi Benjamin, please let us know when you put the videos up.
