So said Juliette Lewis when she performed with her band, Juliette and the Licks at Goldstar Zappa in Tel Aviv last Wednesday night. You might remember Ms. Lewis from her performances in Cape Fear where she was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Natural Born Killers, The Basketball Diaries etc. Some may dismiss Juliette and the Licks as yet another ego-driven vanity project like other Actor-fronted rock bands. In most cases, such a dismissive attitude would be accurate. But not in this case. Juliette Lewis had serious stage presence as she slithered and shimmied across the stage, demonstrating an air of serious gravitas that would befit a major rock talent. The locals couldn’t get enough, lapping up every lick, cheering and hollering in a way atypical for usually reserved Israeli audiences. And apparently they loved their quick jaunt to Israel, having visited both Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. See them if you have a chance. Seriously. And thank them for coming to Israel!
