Is black-Jewish dialogue ever anything less than urgently required? And surely no more so than now, with the extremely disturbing report that as many as 22% of Jewish-American voters did not cast their ballots for Barack.

It makes me wonder if the sad legacy of pain and injustice can ever be overcome....

Yes, while Rice worked for Bush directly, she faithfully worked to implement Bush's policies, which were clearly very pro-Israel. For this, I think Israel, and Jews, owe Bush a debt of gratitude.

Once Rice went to State, that all changed. It just seems to happen that way. Must be something in the water at Foggy Bottom.

In any case, let me repeat what I have said umpteen times before: if I thought that withdrawing from most of the "West Bank", and even the Golan, would bring real peace, I would support it, albeit reluctantly. I don't know how many times I have to say this.

But since it is obvious that nothing of the sort will happen, I oppose it, and any administration that tries to browbeat Israel into withdrawing while not applying the same pressure on the Arabs to stop shooting is, by definition, an anti-Israel administration.

Ephraim, Sect. of State Rice worked for the most Pro-Israel Administration the U.S. has ever had. If you weren't happy with her performance, nothing short of moving to Israel and being stationed on some boarder with an Uzi is going to please you.

Why do you have such an overblown sense of entitlement that the U.S. Government and people owe Israel so much? That the U.S. has a proud history of allowing large numbers of Jews to immigrate here as free people who enjoyed all the benefits of full citizenship is not enough? What other country has been as good to it's Jews and Israel as the U.S.A.?

And the first one should have been from "1888 to 1928". Can't remember how it went in the twenty years before, but the Republicans still had a powerful hold on the office in the aftermath of the Civil War.

Still really tired today and not yet recovered from a serious cold.

Ephraim, the Biden remark about being 'tested' involved a briefing Obama received from US intelligence services, to the effect that chatter had been picked up about a terror attack roughly to coincide with The One's taking office-- that according to the UK Telegraph newspaper.

If it's not jihadist violence, I'll speculate Iran will disclose it's developed nuclear weapons, and/or my personal favorite-- Russia announces it's annexing the Crimea.

The USA will have as viable a democracy as it always has (or has not had, depending on your point of view). Since the inception of the two-party system in its current form, power, at least at the presidential level, has switched between the Dems and the GOP in 40-year cycles. From 1868 to 1928, 7 administrations were Republican and 3 were Democratic. From 1928 to 1968, 7 administrations were Democratic and 3 were Republican. From 1968 to 1928, 7 administrations were Republican and 3 were Democratic. My friend (who also works in an empirical field) thinks I'm reading too much into these patterns, but taking them seriously at least gives the GOP some time to figure their shit out (and methinks they have A LOT of shit to figure out), as well as giving the Dems some time to feel proud of the positive impact that they might actually be able to have on American government for the first time in a generation.

Both the tragic events of 1968 and our response and the systemic reactions to them split the country in a horrible way that we might just now finally be coming to terms with.

Third parties come and go in America and serve their purpose but the system is too far rigged against the ultimate success of any one of them as a permanent structural component.
