Someone just forwarded me this specific blog entry. My real first name is Victoria. I’m a secular Jew, and didn’t receive a Hebrew name at birth. Later in life, a highly-esteemed Conservative rabbi gave me the name Vered, which means in Aramaic, “a rose that is about to bloom, i.e., rosebud.” I’m very happy with this name! Some of my school friends still call me Vicky. Enjoy your name!!

Vered sounds bad in English (because it’s pronounced like “Jared”..not very feminine), but it’s a beautiful name in Hebrew.

Shoshana is old-fashioned (the equivalent of the name Rose in English, it’s an old woman’s name), but Vered is a modern name in Israel and is actually quite common.

Here are some examples of Vereds:

…and many more.
I’ve never heard of an Israeli who dislikes that name. I think that a lot of Israeli names don’t translate well into English (plants, animals, weather, months, etc.)

i just wanted to say i think vered is a beautiful name,
i think you should keep it..
people allways wanna change their names, even when they chose it themselves…
when i was little i didn’t like my name ‘cuz it’s a boys/girls name and everytime i was answering the phone people though i’m a little sweet boy!! and i said to myself “god if i had name like shir or daphna it would’nt happend..”
but now i think its kinda special name…

so just learn to love him…

I’m 4th-generation American, and my parents didn’t speak Modern Israeli Hebrew. They just gave me a nice traditional name. Nothing wrong with that.

i had to use my English name in Israel because all the Israelis were horribly confused by my bilingual Hebrew-Yiddish traditional Ashkenazi name.

My hebrew name is vered! And while in elementary school i would deny it to the death, I would love to have a little daughter named vered. Hey, if israelis can call their kids keshet(rainbow)and kesem (magic)and dekel (bark on a palm tree) and so on…what’s wrong with a little rosie??

i’m sure ck likes my hebrew name…his mom gave it to me

girl, i sympathize. here’s a fellow soviet jew who wishes her parents would have given her a hebrew name! and actually taught her some jewish traditions. but no, i was baptized!

i think my name, roza, (okay, that’s definitely more old jewish lady than “russian” but still) would be translated to either shoshana or vered.

hmm. i prefer names like avivit and raheli and liel. oh well.

In 7th grade, I had a crush on an Israeli girl named Vered. In fact, all my crushes in middle school were with Israeli girls. Of course, instead I moved to Israel but married an American. So, I still like the name even if the crush was unrequited.
