It’s oddly fortunate that the content of their letter won’t even matter. If Greyson dared to answer questions at a press conference, he’d be immediately discredited by questions like “how can you be an artist who claims to value freedom of expression while you abuse that freedom by using it to censor others?” and “care to explain why you’re willing to support and promote Israeli-funded film X but not Israeli-funded film Y?” Catching someone with his hand in the wrong cookie jar, so to speak, does a lot more damage to someone’s character than offering to sink to his level under the pretense of having a civilized discussion. As well it should! Greyson’s illogical politics speaks for itself — if he’s boycotting Israeli films that don’t suit his taste while supporting other Israeli films that do (and serving on the board of Palestinian film festivals), then he’s already dismissed his own credibility and there’s no need to discuss what may or may not have happened in 1948 with someone like that.

However, they are doing it precisely so they can claim that their intentions are different than their actions. They will stand at a press conference in a few days and repeat their claims about not targeting individuals and how they wish no harm to individuals, just institutions.

It does not serve anybody who cares about truth, about Justice and about Israel to attack this group virulently. They are wrong and their claims are wrong, but they are presented with great skill and will garner a lot of sympathy from journalists. It is better to take their claims apart with facts, and refrain from bombastic attacks on them.

Everything written there is a complete lie. This is a blood libel, and no, I’m not exaggerating. They’re essentially saying that Jews took the blood of Arabs and called it “Tel Aviv”. Jerusalem is another matter entirely, because that’s a city with an undeniably rich and complex religious and cultural history. But Tel Aviv? Since when was Tel Aviv’s Jewish ancestry something that was open to debate? Where does this rewriting of history stop?

As for Mondoweiss, I don’t have the time or patience to go in there and do battle with the frothing-heads. It’s hard to respect that site or their debates.
