On Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, an alarm goes off throughout Israel. People stop whatever it is they are doing and stand in silence for a moment in order to commemorate the murder of 6 million Jews by the Nazis. The only people you will see moving in this video is a photographer, because the 5th estate stops for no one, and a Haredi Jew. The Haredim don’t really recognize Holocaust Memorial Day as a holy day. Instead, they commemorate the memory of all Jewish martyrs on either the 9th day of the month of Av (Tisha B’Av) or on the 10th day of the month of Tevet (Asarah B’Tevet), depending on which of our commenters you hold by.

  • Thanks for the correction itzchokaizik. I have this stupid mental block in my head and I often get Tisha B’Av and Asarah B’Tevet mixed up. It’s just one of those things. I fixed it on the post.

  • As far as I know, Tischa BeAv is the right date of the charejdi shoah-memorial. According to charejdi halachah Jews recognize that all jewish misfortunes have their roots in the events of Tisha beAv. Therefore no new day of mourning was designated to commemorate later events, they are all included in the saying of the kinnot of Tisha beAv. There are also some “new” kinnot for this inclusion for example a kinnah from the Bobover Rav…
By the way: Thank you for the video!
