The Anti-Hate Declaration – Avoiding Propaganda: An Open Letter to the Toronto Palestinian Film Festival

Hmmm. An Open Letter?

The Anti-Hate Declaration: An Open Letter to the Toronto Palestine Film Festival
September 25, 2009

Let me state for the record that I am merely expressing my opinions and I do not advocate a boycott against TPFF. This is merely a protest letter.

I have been inspired by the letters of protest and boycott against the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival and have come to realize that as a member of the international internet, film, culture and media arts communities, I am deeply disturbed by the Toronto Palestine Film Festival’s decision to host a celebratory film festival in 2009 with an emphasis on certain types of Palestinian films. I protest that TPFF, whether intentionally or not, has become complicit in the Palestinian propaganda machine.

In 2009, Hamas, the ruling party in Gaza, was accused by the UNHRC’s Goldstone Report of alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. In response, a Hamas minister announced to the press that the Palestinians were using “primitive rockets” and were actually aiming at army bases. This disingenuous response after the launching of 8000 rockets at Israeli civilian centers, including towns as far as Ashdod and Beersheva is clearly unsatisfactory and serves as no defense.

Ticket To Jerusalem Project

tkt2j

Nope. This isn’t about a free Birthright Israel trip (although registration for winter begins Sept. 8th and you can go with us – more info here), or any kind of flashy contest with cool prizes. The Ticket to Jerusalem Project is a simple concept, really. All you have to do is create any kind of artwork called “Ticket To Jerusalem”. Do it on a thick horizontal piece of paper, 8×3″ (20×8 cm), the size of conventional airplane ticket or boarding pass. Attach a stamp, add a return address and mail it WITHOUT an envelope to: Radik Shvarts, PO Box 245614, Brooklyn, NY, 11224, USA. The project deadline is January 1st, 2010 and all entries will posted online. Most of them will also be exhibited internationally and featured in a book titled “Ticket To Jerusalem” that will be published in 2010. Every person, whose artwork is featured in the book will get a free copy.

That’s it! So far the site features a pretty eclectic collection of 41 pieces of ticket art and, and… I don’t know what to say. It’s kind of sweet because there seems to be no underlying political message. No one’s trying to sell you anything, it’s just this very whimsical thing that is a pure celebration of creativity. OK so it is sponsored by the UJA Federation of New York, and COJECO (a central coordinating body in the Russian Jewish community of NY that works towards successul integration of Russian Jews into American Jewish life) but so what? Good on them for being involved in something that’s this much… fun!

Israel is Sex

New York International Fringe Festival Comedy Sex and the Holy Land

sexholyland

One cannot ignore the correlation between sex and Israel that exists in the hearts and loins of the tens of thousands of parentally unsupervised diaspora youth that visit Israel every year. Many will explore the hills, valleys and bodies of water that dot the country while engaging in a similar exploration of each others bodies. Many will note the sheer sexiness of the terrain and the sun kissed people that inhabit it. A good number of diaspora women will have, uh… physical interactions with refreshingly forward Israelis, though a much smaller number of diaspora men will be so fortunate (Israeli women don’t tend to be very attracted to boyish, soft in the middle Jewish guys). Thus it is no surprise that Sex and the Holy Land, a play opening at the New York International Fringe Festival this week is focused on the adventures of Lili, a female protagonist. A similar play focusing on a guy’s adventures would read as follows: “Tried to get with soldier chick. Fail. Tried to get with girl medic. Fail. Tried to get with bartender girl. Fail. Finally got with that slut from Fresno who wanted to cheat on her boyfriend. Bitchin!” Yeah. Boring right? But from a woman’s perspective? Hotness. And funny too apparently.

From their press release:

SEX AND THE HOLY LAND is the tale of Lili’s plunge into a stereotype-shattering sexploration of Israel. Her two best friends and a string of Middle Eastern men lead Lili out of enslavement by the Greek Chorus of Jewish Mothers ruling in her mind. It is a coming of age comedy about liberation, religion, and love… Marking 23-year-old playwright Melanie Zoey Weinstein’s New York debut, SEX AND THE HOLY LAND was inspired by Weinstein’s study abroad experience in Tel Aviv in Spring 2007, following the Second Lebanon War. “It was a time of disillusionment and questioning for myself and many of my friends,” said Weinstein. “We were experiencing Israel for the first time as adults outside of the Jewish institutions in which we were raised.”

Sex and the Holy Land will be performed 5 times at the New York International Fringe Festival starting August 18. If you go see it, let us know what you think!

An Open Letter to the Yes Men: Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno

Say NO! to meaningless sloganeering and empty gestures!

Say NO! to meaningless sloganeering and empty gestures!

From Amazon.com: Multinational corporations have many enemies but few as creative and funny as the Yes Men. In 1993, Mike Bonanno made news by switching the voice boxes of Barbie and G.I. Joe dolls and returning them to store shelves. In 1996, Andy Bichlbaum made a splash by programming kissing, swimsuit-clad men into 80,000 copies of an action video game. When the two met, a collaboration was born. In 1999, they created a Web site parodying that of the World Trade Organization (WTO).Though the WTO denounced the spoof site, and though its creators felt the satire was self-evident, legitimate speaking invitations began arriving by e-mail. Undaunted, the Yes Men donned thrift-store suits and went where they’d been asked, posing as WTO spokemen and making outrageously callous statements. Their audiences were unfazed, prompting the Yes Men to raise the stakes again and again.

In 2008, the Yes Men premiered The Yes Men Fix the World at Sundance, a movie which follows the two as they infiltrate the world of big business and pull off outrageous pranks that highlight the ways that corporate greed is destroying the planet. Invited to present their film at the Jerusalem Film Festival, they originally agreed and then pulled out, citing their adherence to the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign against Israel. Asked why they don’t boycott the Congo or the US, Andy Bichlbaum said that “we haven’t been invited to the Kinshasa Film Festival (and we wouldn’t have been able to afford the private security force if we had been). More importantly, changing U.S. policy (and the direct and indirect results of that policy, e.g. in the Congo) is going to take a lot more than a boycott—whereas in Israel, a boycott could actually work.” Given that the bulk of their revenue comes from the US, one can’t help note that that sure is a convenient answer.

The duo then wrote an open letter to the organizers of the Jerusalem Film Festival articulating the reasons for their decision not to present their film there. I in turn decided to write an open letter to Andy and Mike expressing why I will no longer pay to see their films or buy their books. Read it after the bump!

Dear Hamas, Take Me!

Seriously, I'd be a great replacement for Gilad Shalit!

Seriously, I'd be a great replacement for Gilad Shalit!

It’s clear that even after three years in captivity, it’s unlikely that Hamas is going to let Gilad Shalit go any time soon. Some of the reasons for this, beyond the fact that Hamas are heartless motherfuckers, were succinctly elucidated by Guy Bechor in an opinion piece in YNet titled Hamas fears a swap. Bechor outlines 10 reasons why including the fact that Shalit is the only asset currently possessed by Hamas; Hamas’ Damascus based leadership doesn’t really want to release prisoners like the domestic Hamas leaders currently in prisons as well as Fatah’s Marwan Barghoutti, both of whom will challenge their control etc. etc. The bottom line is that Hamas needs an Israeli prisoner. But does it have to be Gilad Shalit?

I suggest that they let Gilad Shalit go. Three years without even a visit from the Red Cross is enough already. Instead, they can take me. By letting Gilad rejoin his friends and family, they can show what awesome humanitarians they are and by taking me, they can retain the advantages they have secured from kidnapping an Israeli. I think I’d be a pretty good hostage too! Like Shalit I hold dual citizenship, my Mom and sisters are sure to go batshit – crying for the camera and begging for my release while my Dad can present the stoic figure of a simple man thrust into the limelight, begging Israeli and world leaders to do what they can to secure my release. Unlike Shalit I can bide my time preparing excellent Tahini and Shakshuka for my captors and if Hamas wants to get really creative, they can allow me Internet access which will enable me to blog and tweet about how awful or awesome my captors are. But that’s entirely up to them. I’m willing to go with absolutely no preconditions. I’ll even bring a few cartons of Marlboro cigarettes as a humanitarian gift to my future captors who must be getting seriously raspy throats from all those nasty Egyptian Cleopatra cigarettes they’re forced to smoke because of Israel’s blockade. I’d really be an awesome hostage. Really. My lease expires September 15th and doing the swap by then would allow Shalit to rejoin his family in time for the holidays. I don’t have much going on right now, I’m not dating anyone and it might not be a bad idea to ride out the bad economic times in a Gaza prison as a guest of Hamas.

Now it’s entirely possible that some other reader of Jewlicious would make for a better hostage. If you think you’d be a superior replacement to Gilad Shalit, let me know! Send me a photo of you holding a “Dear Hamas, Take me!” sign and let me know why you’d make a better hostage and we’ll repost it here. If you convince me that you’re tougher and more congenial than me, I may even send you a free “I Love Hashem” t-shirt which I am sure would serve you really well in Gaza… REALLY well… Send all entries to jewlicious at gmail dot com and enter “Dear Hamas Take Me!” into the subject line.

Messianic “Rabbi” School on Facebook

If they were not on Facebook inviting people to join their fanpage, I might never had heard of this. Well, perhaps I would have when I got to LA, which seems to be the hive of their activities.

Apparently LA is the center of some really frightenting parasitic religious groups. There is of course Madonna’s Kabob Center and there is this: The Messianic Jewish Theological Institute. With campuses in LA and Jerusalem, I might add.

I know that we have serious problems out there. Big, and Major problems. With Israel, Iran, terror, unemployment. All kinds of “mean, ugly and nasty” stuff, to quote Arlo Guthrie. So why waste a few keystrokes on these guys?

Well they are on Facebook, and I feel a moral obligation to inform and warn the general public about this parasitic group that regularly feeds on unsuspecting Jews.

Ok. Now you know. If you are Jewish, please stay far far far far away from these guys and you will be fine.

From their Rabbinical Program Desciption:

RO’I offers practical courses in congregational leadership. RO’I also provides spiritual and vocational direction for Rabbinical candidates. While SJS is a distance learning program, RO’I offers intensive, face-to-face courses given in conjunction with UMJC conferences and retreats.

MJTI is an approved school of the Union of Messianic Jewish Congregations. We offer the courses required for the UMJC Madrikh (Licensure) Certificate and S’micha (Ordination). You can learn more about the MJTI courses by reading the MJTI Program Guide.

However, MJTI does not offer the Madrikh and S’micha credentials themselves. These are offered by the UMJC. For more information about the Madrikh (Licensure) Certificate, and an application for the program, please visit the UMJC website.

How much is Woody Allen’s face worth?

This image does NOT give me a woody

This image does NOT give me a woody

$5 Million apparently…

Our dear froylein wrote about Woody Allen’s $10 million suit against American Apparel for using his image on billboards in Hollywood and New York without his permission. On the eve of the trial, American Apparel’s Insurance company and Allen reached a settlement for $5 million. Which is too bad really. I was curious to find out what possible commercial value could be associated with a guy who took nude pics of and later married his girlfriend’s adopted daughter. Allen and said girlfriend, Mia Farrow, had a biological son together and Ronan Seamus Farrow had this to say about Daddy’s shenanigans:

He’s my father married to my sister. That makes me his son and his brother-in-law. That is such a moral transgression. I cannot see him. I cannot have a relationship with my father and be morally consistent… I lived with all these adopted children, so they are my family. To say Soon-Yi was not my sister is an insult to all adopted children.

American Apparel’s lawyers promised to wage a scorched earth battle against Allen. Also at issue was the company’s 1st Amendment rights to make a non-commercial statement and make “fair use” of an image that would otherwise fall under copyright protection. Dov Charney, the CEO of AA stated:

For the record, I personally think we had a good case. As one of my lawyers, Adam Levin explained, “Common sense dictates that the billboard at issue here is ‘not a simple advertisement.’ As a matter of law, no commercial transaction is proposed: no merchandise is shown or described, and no price is quoted. Instead, the billboard contains an image of an Orthodox Jew in a black top hat – none of which can be purchased at American Apparel. And the writing on the poster is not the copy of a commercial advertisement, but Yiddish words identifying Allen as “The High Rabbi.” Finally, even if the billboard is found to have the dual purpose of a commercial transaction and an expressive medium, First Amendment protection still attaches because the two elements are ‘inextricably intertwined.’ The decision of the United States Court of Appeal for the Ninth Circuit in Hoffman v. Capital Cities/ABC http://www.altlaw.org/v1/cases/1610780 …makes [it] abundantly clear that the speech at issue in this case is protected by the First Amendment. Any other conclusion inevitably would chill critical social and political commentary and debate.” … The billboards were designed to inspire dialogue. They were certainly never intended to sell clothes.

American Apparel has in the past used it’s marketing clout to advocate for immigration reform and against California’s Proposition 8 which banned gay marriage in the state.

Woody Allen is a wienie, what can I say. I would have had a tiny smidgen of respect for him had he just accepted the pulling of the billboards after less than a week and an apology. But that’s not saying much really. I find it hard to have respect for anyone who done diddled where he done did. Jerk. I’m now going to make it a point to shop at the American Apparel on Rivlin street in Jerusalem in order to help offset the company’s higher insurance premiums. OK, ok. I’m also gonna buy some hot shorts for a friend who I am sure is going to look awesome in ‘em. What can I say? I’m a true humanitarian!

Props to Jessica at Israel 21c for finally noticing that Jerusalem has an American Apparel! Here’s a tip though. Next time you visit the store, leave the double stroller outside – one of the staff will be happy to watch the kids while you shop for uh… hot shorts or whatever!

Incoming York University Student President Reprimanded, Fined and Unaplogetic

So far we have a number of posts about the incident in Feb., 2009 when identifiably Jewish students were blocked inside the university’s Hillel office while a crowd outside chanted hysterically and intimidatingly at them. The chants, “Racists off campus” focused on the theme that the Zionists were racists and racists should leave campus. By focusing on Zionists and conducting the sudden rally outside the identifiably Jewish Hillel offices, the angry mob made their intentions clear.

A York University investigation concluded that Jesse Zimmerman and the incoming student federation president, Krisna Saravanamuttu, should both be reprimanded by York for this event. You can see the two leading chants at 1:20 of this video. Then keep watching as Saravanamuttu blames Jewish groups, Hillel, Hasbara and campus Zionists for keeping him and others out of a press conference because of ulterior motives.

Later that day, after protesters were finally removed by police, Saravanamuttu denied any culpability or any bigotry. He told a reporter that charges of anti-Semitism were “categorically false” and that he “heard nothing of that nature at all.” Demonstrators, according to his version merely chanted, “Racism off campus” and “Students united will never be defeated.”

After being reprimanded and fined for his actions on May 22, Saravanamuttu remained unrepentant. In that report he is quoted as saying:

“Several formal complaints were made to the University about students making racist comments on campus, yet the University did nothing. I decided to stand up against racism and I think it’s absurd that I was fined by the University for saying “racists off campus,” said Saravanamuttu. “When racist incidents happened on campus and nothing was done about it students took a stand, and for that we were punished.”

Hmmmm…

So he was standing up to racism?

Let’s check the facts.

There used to be a video on Youtube, now gone, of Jesse Zimmerman and a mob of supporters outside the Hillel offices chanting against Zionists by accusing them of racism and demanding the racists leave campus. Zimmerman is heard saying, “Zionism does not speak for Jews. Zionism is an embarrassment. Shame on the Zionists.” Had Zimmerman not said anything about Zionists, we might think this was just about a bunch of racists, but between the diatribe against Zionists and the fact they were yelling outside the Hillel office, it’s clear who they meant.

In interviews with members of Hillel, they state that on that day, as they were moving to their office because of the fear they felt at an earlier press conference, they were called dirty Jews and other abhorrent language.

Now, it’s possible to say that since these nasty comments don’t exist on tape, they aren’t provable. However, I believe that the context of what Zimmerman was leading with this mob that was blocking the Hillel room where students were cowering in fear clarifies exactly what this was.

Here is the backstory:

The students hiding in the Hillel office included Jews and non-Jews. They were all members of a group called Drop YFS which was focused on removing the York Student Federation from office because they felt the YFS completely mismanaged the CUPE strike by supporting CUPE to the detriment of the York student body. CUPE is the union representing contract faculty and teaching assistants. They wanted improvements in their pay and employment conditions and ended up striking for nearly 3 months. York students were severely affected as a result and it cost some their academic year or delayed graduation for others. This made many students angry and the support of their own government in this infuriated them. That’s why the impeachment drive with Drop YFS was launched.

It so happened that many of the organizers of Drop YFS were Jews, some of whom belonged to Hillel. They had been planning these protests since December of 2008. The CUPE strike began in November and the YFS’s support was already in place.

Then, at the end of December, Israel attacked Gaza. On January 21, the YFS condemned Israel for the Gaza offensive, making no mention of Hamas and its actions. To put this in context, this vote happened after Drop YFS began its campaign.

But the YFS soon changed the subject of the impeachment drive and began blaming the DROP YFS campaign on pro-Israel interests that were opposed to their vote on Gaza. There is only one way to view this in my opinion: the YFS lied to gain favor and avoid impeachment.

On the day that Drop YFS held the press conference to announce their feat of gaining the 5000 votes (out of 50,000 students on the York campus) needed to impeach the standing YFS council, the room was closed because it could only hold 30 people legally and after 40 people entered the hosts – the leaders of Drop YFS – were ordered by police to stop letting people in.

It was then that Krisna Saravanamuttu stood outside the room and led a large group of supporters through accusatory chants, supposedly for being excluded from the press conference.

Did he accuse the non-Jews of Drop YFS for this exclusion? Nope.

Did he blame the police which prevented the organizers of the news conference from letting more people into the room? Nope.

He, a member of the YFS, blamed Hillel and Hasbara, two Jewish campus groups, along with campus Zionists, for trying to bring the YFS down because of the Gaza vote. This can be seen in the video above at around 1:35.

As he and the others around him disrupted the news conference, they created a very uncomfortable barrier for the students seeking to leave the room. They left the press conference room and moved to the Hillel offices. Reportedly, it was then that members of the mob gathered around Krisna called some of the Drop YFS members nasty anti-Semitic things – and went on to shout about Zionists being racists and down with racism outside the Hillel office. There is no evidence that Krisna did any of these things. The video shows him at an earlier point in time as a leader, but not visible later.

Since there was no racism here on the part of Drop YFS, and since the members of Drop YFS came from different parts of the university and included non-Jews and people of color, and since the campaign began in December before the YFS Gaza vote, it is very difficult to read what happened here and conclude that this was anything but an anti-Semitic incident. It may have been cynical in its nature and meant to buttress the standing of the YFS, but the targeting of Jewish groups with unfounded accusations is anti-Semitism.

So when Krisna is quoted as saying “When racist incidents happened on campus and nothing was done about it students took a stand, and for that we were punished” to absolve himself of the reprimand he received from York, his reconstruction of the event just doesn’t fit with the video where he makes the statement at 1:35 in which he accuses Jewish groups of trying to knock off the YFS because of the Gaza vote. I don’t see any connection between these statements.

Congratulations to the York student body on electing Krisna Saravanamuttu to lead their student federation.

Leaving the West Bank

In recent weeks I’ve had to repeat, several times, that I advocate a unilateral Israeli withdrawal from most of the West Bank to the portion of Judea and Samaria that is west of the Security Fence. I don’t believe this will constitute a final border, but it will remove a pretty sharp arrowhead from Israel’s bleeding achilles heel.

To be clear, I consider the West Bank to be “disputed” territory and not occupied. I believe this land is the cradle of Jewish civilization, perhaps to a greater degree even than where Israel is situated today. I abhor the bigotry that causes the Arabs to seek to remove all of the Jews from their midst. I am fully aware that the Palestinians do not seek a Jewish state called Israel to exist next to them and have designs on the entire area (including Jordan).

I have little sympathy for the Palestinians and their war on Israel. They could have and should have made peace long ago, and the formula has been on the table for almost a decade. In other words, I don’t believe that justice rests with the Palestinians. They have not earned a state or the right to a state. They have shown in Gaza that left to their own devices, they will use their resources to wage war rather than build their society and economy.

The weepy Left excuses all of these shortcomings, usually by blaming Israel: “the Occupation;” “the starvation of Palestinians;” “genocide;” “cruelty;” “collective punishment;” “resistance;” etc. They fall all over themselves justifying Palestinian terrorism, Palestinian war-mongering, Palestinian anti-Semitism and even Palestinian lies and perfidy.

For example, if you read a number of the anti-Zionist blog-sites out there, even ones written by Jews, they have taken recent Palestinian claims about ownership of the Dead Sea Scrolls at face value. They actually call Israelis thieves for possessing the Scrolls even though the Scrolls are written in Hebrew and Aramaic, contain the books of the Torah, and other writings that relate to religious life and belief among those Judeans who lived in the area we now call the West Bank a couple of thousand years ago. There could not be a clearer case of artifacts bearing the cultural heritage of a people than the relationship between the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Jewish people. And yet, in a cynical game played by the very same people who declare openly that Jews have no historic, religious or cultural connection to the Land of Israel, the Palestinians claim and demand ownership of these treasures of Jewish history.

In other words, morality is not the Palestinians’ strong suit. Their sympathizers have to twist themselves into awkward pretzel-like shapes to excuse the behavior of the Palestinians over this past century of conflict. Of course, they do it by constantly casting blame upon the Jews and upon Zionists.

By leaving most of the West Bank/Judea and Samaria, Israel would be handing over this important area to the Palestinians.

Then again, the Israelis are far from perfect themselves. The ongoing construction of settlements over the past 40 years has been an epic mistake.

God Hates Fags. And Jews. And Obama.

Antichrist Obama will soon lead the armies of the world in bloody war and persecution against Israel

Antichrist Obama will soon lead the armies of the world in bloody war and persecution against Israel

Those of you in LA might want to pop by the Israeli consulate on 6380 Wilshire Blvd. this Friday at 11:15 am. There you will be treated to a protest of sorts by whacknut Christian members of the Westboro Baptist Church, you know, the God Hates Fags people? Anyhow, turns out they hate Jews too. And Obama. Here’s something from a flier they sent out recently about their upcoming demonstration (sorry no link it was sent to me by email. Thanks Josh):

JEWS KILLED JESUS! Yes, the Jews killed the Lord Jesus (1 Th. 2:14-15). Now they’re carrying water for the fags; that’s what they do best: sin in God’s face every day, with unprecedented and disproportionate amounts of sodomy, fornication, adultery, abortion and idolatry! God hates these dark-hearted rebellious disobedient Jews.

WBC WILL PICKET THE APOSTATE, CHRIST-KILLING JEWS TO REMIND THEM THAT THE WRATH OF GOD IS COME UPON THEM TO THE UTTERMOST (1 Th. 2:16)

Antichrist Obama will soon lead the armies of the world in bloody war and persecution against Israel. Only the remnant elect Jews will repent, mourn, and be delivered (See Rev. 7 & 14; Zech. 12 & 14; Isa. 66; Mt. 24; Mk. 13; Luke 21). GOD HATES ISRAEL! ISRAEL IS DOOMED!

So yeah. If you’re around, do feel free to pop by, take pictures and laugh your ass off at Reverend Fred Phelps and his band of whacknut loony tunes. Afterwards they will also picket Corona del Mar High School, 2101 Eastbluff Dr., Newport Beach, CA at 2:15 pm. I have no idea why. And if you do go and snap some pics, please, please, please send me some. I need a good laugh.

Holocaust Memorial Day and the Plight of Palestinian Panties

Palestinian Panty Pogrom

Palestinian Panty Pogrom

Today in Israel it’s Holocaust Memorial Day. This morning the sirens sounded and everyone stopped for a moment of contemplation. Cars halted on highways, everything was quiet save for the mournful shriek of the air raid sirens. Today is a day that commemorates the Holocaust that saw the annihilation of 6 million Jews at the hands of the Nazis and their enablers during WWII. The definitive phrase is “Never Again” and while we use that to imply that never again shall the Jews be victims of Genocide, we ought to also contemplate and consider other victims of Genocide.

Representatives of most of the world are united in Geneva today at The World Conference Against Racism. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reminded the world that we don’t have to look far to see victims of Genocide. Right in our own backyard, the brave people of Gaza are suffering untold oppression at the hands of brutal Zionist thugs. We were reminded that Gaza is nothing less than one giant concentration camp whose inmates are subject to random death, hunger and deprivation.

One story of such deprivation published recently by Spiegel Online was particularly touching. The subject was the sexy underwear market of Damascus:

“It all started about four or five years ago,” says Hayek. His grandfather was a merchant too, selling underwear — still chaste in those days — to women. But then Syria got wired. “Ever since people started going to Internet cafes, and seeing what the rest of the world is wearing, demand has completely changed,” says Hayek. Damascene women at first asked bashfully for “special designs.” Now the fruits of the Internet-fuelled imaginations of Syrian designers are displayed in the open… The customers tend to be mothers buying underwear for their soon-to-be-married daughters… “The mothers believe their son-in-law will be less interested in other women if his wife surprises him with more and more new gimmicks at home,” he says. In a culture where there is always the danger that the man may find a second or third wife for himself, wives want to make sure their husband stays loyal to them, Abu Adnan speculates… Abu Adnan also has leather outfits, sold complete with whip, and maid costumes featuring zippers at crucial points, which are in short supply. His best seller, however, is the “applause” design. Abu Adnan holds up a slip decorated with feathers. “Please clap your hands twice,” he says. After two sharp claps, the slip falls out of the shopkeeper’s hand. “A built-in mechanism releases magnets,” he says. “This way the man can undress the woman without touching her.”

The news of exotic Syrian underwear has spread across the Middle East. These skivvies now represent an important export item and sales are often seen as a barometer of regional tastes and politics.

After many years in the underwear business, Nasser says he’s an expert on what goes on in Arab bedrooms. “I tell you, Palestinian women are the most interesting. They want sexy stuff — the saucier the better.” … “As long as Israel is quiet, we do very good business with Gaza…”

Hence we see that one of the first victims of Israeli intransigence in Gaza is the Palestinian bedroom. With heightened tensions, along with basic food supplies, badly needed medicine and other humanitarian aid, imports of sexy Syrian undies are jeopardized as are countless Palestinian marriages and boudoirs. This undeniably has a detrimental effect on the birthrate and is in fact a manifestation of Genocide and a heinous war crime that ought to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. As a nation that mourns the victims of the Nazi Holocaust, it is shameful beyond comprehension that we are perpetuating pogroms against Palestinian panties. Shameful.

Oh the humanity.

Save Passover

Let's help them out...

Let's help them out...

As many of you know, I live in Jerusalem close (very close) to the central market. My neighborhood is very eclectic and includes artists, students, young families, migrant workers and lower income households. I live a block away from both a soup kitchen AND a high end wine shop. This co-mingling of very different people is what makes the neighborhood so interesting. It helps explain why the market aka the Shuk aka Machaneh Yehuda is such an interesting place to visit in Jerusalem. Fridays are especially busy when folks from every socio-economic background run around preparing for the Sabbath, shoulder to shoulder with camera packing tourists and Taglit Birthright Israel participants. The mass of humanity is both colorful and touching.

However, many in the neighborhood live here not out of some love of fresh produce. Nor are they attracted to the colorful character of the neighborhood. The market is loud and boisterous and many of the buildings are in a state of advanced disrepair. Consequently, the rents are often cheap and many of Jerusalem’s most impoverished citizens live here.

Passover is a really sucky time to be poor. I’ve already given certain families whatever I could to help them get through the holiday with food on their tables. I use whatever cunning and guile I can to help for these are proud people not comfortable with handouts. For instance, an organization was in the news yesterday because they sold Matza’s for 1 shekel (25 cents) a package. There was quite a mob scene and of course I wasn’t there. But I bought a bunch of Matza and gave it to a few families. I told them I got it for a shekel and that I bought way more than I could possibly use. They were doing me a favor taking it off my hands.

In any case, I’d like to help out more and I’d like to give the Jewlicious “Family” the opportunity to help as well. Jerusalem’s existing facilities are straining to meet the demand caused by the double whammy of a rapidly deteriorating economy and hobbled Jewish philanthropies. Feel free to use the donate button below to donate any sum of money to this cause. I will use it to buy more Matza and otherwise help the people in the neighborhood that I know need it. No donation is too small! Help make Passover a little more pleasant for the people that make this awesome Jerusalem neighborhood so interesting. Thanks!

Good Editorial about Chas Freeman

Since writing this, I have added another detailed post regarding Freeman. Of course it is highly recommended. ;)

I read a terrific editorial by Matt Welch of Reason Magazine which is worth a look. By the way, I’ve read that Reason is a “Libertarian” mag, so it is certainly not my political cup of tea.

Anyway, in their magazine’s blog, Hit & Run, Welch, who is Reason’s editor-in-chief, republished an op-ed that he wrote for the LA Times responding to their editorial taking at face value Charles W. Freeman’s outburst attacking the “Israel Lobby” for undermining his candidacy for chairman of the National Intelligence Council.

Vehement objections came from several of Israel’s most loyal supporters in Congress, from some journalists and lobbyists known for their strong support of the Jewish state, and from other members of what some would no doubt call, well, the Israel lobby.

Freeman, as the Times editorial pointed out had said in the past,

“the brutal oppression of the Palestinians by the Israeli occupation shows no sign of ending.” He also said: “American identification with Israel has become total.” Israel, he once said, “excels at war; sadly, it has shown no talent for peace.”

When he resigned as a candidate, Freeman, proving that he not only would have been biased in a position requiring objectivity, but also showing a serious lack of judgment and perhaps a need to be less, uh, zealous, in his views said:

“The tactics of the Israel Lobby plumb the depths of dishonor and indecency” and reflect “an utter disregard for truth.”

Stewart vs. Cramer

Wow. Jon Stewart, the host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show tore Jim Cramer a new butt hole. Cramer, the loud and combative host of CNBC’s Mad Money along with the rest of the financial reporting industry and business news cable networks, were accused by Stewart of not only failing to foresee the credit crisis, but siding with bankers and helping to inflate the bubble. Stewart also “…pointedly questioned the hyped-up theatricality and dubious claims of CNBC shows like “Mad Money” and “Fast Money.” When Mr. Cramer explained, “There is market for it and you give it to them,” Mr. Stewart stared at him in disbelief, exclaiming. “There’s a market for cocaine and hookers!”” Stewart noted that “If I had only followed CNBC’s advice, I’d have a million dollars today … provided that I’d started with $100 million” A de-fanged Cramer for the most part just sat and took it, blaming deceptive colleagues and sources and promising to do better in the future.

Uh… yeah. You can watch the whole unedited segment on the Comedy Central Web site. In this case, Stewart was right on the money, so to speak, as opposed to his little Gaza rant which was a little off, but we forgive him…

Son of Norman Golb Arrested because of Alleged Dead Sea Scrolls Attacks

In what seems like an eternity ago, I attended a Dead Sea Scrolls exhibition in San Diego. I loved it and wrote about it. Another Jewlicious writer, Rabbi Yonah, and his lovely wife Rachel, also attended and planned to post about it. However, a little problem by the name of Charles Gadda got in the way.

Well, it appears that Charles Gadda may soon be put away. In prison. “Charles Gadda,” appears to be the same person arrested by the Manhattan DA, Raphael Golb, a couple of days ago for “creating multiple aliases to engage in a campaign of impersonation and harassment relating to the Dead Sea Scrolls and scholars of opposing viewpoints.”

It appears that Raphael Golb’s father, Norman Golb, is a scholar who studies Dead Sea Scrolls. The Manhattan DA is alleging that Raphael used aliases to defend his father’s theories and attack others (with different theories). To do this, he used internet aliases.

Norman and Raphael Golb

Norman and Raphael Golb

Well, we at Jewlicious have known about this for a long time. We didn’t know who was doing it, but after I posted the review of the Scrolls show in San Diego, we were visited by “Charles Gadda” who offered a critique of the show and disagreed with my review. The weird thing is he never saw the exhibition, he just felt confident about attacking it. Soon after Gadda arrived, another new commenter, using the name “Allegro Was Right,” posted an incredible essay showing similarities in language between a series of people posting on the internet, including Charles Gadda, who were all posting attacks on Dead Sea Scrolls exhibitions and praising Professor Norman Golb.

That essay seemed to drive Gadda wild with anger. He began posting highly offensive comments attacking people involved with the San Diego exhibition. I recall that he accused William (Bill) Schniedewind and Risa Levitt Kohn, the curator, of terrible things. it was one of the most vicious debates we had ever seen on Jewlicious. He also introduced other aliases into the discussion, but it was obvious that the same person was doing it. At one point, one of the aliases posted unfounded allegations of antisemitism against Schniedewind and that was when I decided to remove the discussion, shut it down and asked Rabbi Yonah not to post his positive review of the San Diego exhibition so as to convince this Gadda person to keep away.

It was a truce of sorts: Jewlicious removed the “Allegro Was Right” essay showing that multiple characters were “promoting” Norman Golb and attacking people that appeared to be in Golb’s way, and Gadda would not use Jewlicious as a platform to accuse innocent professors of being antisemites or whatever other nasty things he was saying about them. I feel that if you’re going to attack somebody for being an antisemite, you better have a strong case. In this case, it appeared to be a cynical attack, intended to besmirch people to advance a position, not because they are antisemitic.

Gadda (allegedly Raphael Golb) or aliases have tried to post here a couple of times since, but I removed his comments each time. I also removed one follow-up comment by “Allegro” who hasn’t been seen since (unless it is he who posted the arrest news a couple of days ago) so as not to fan the flames and draw the ire of “Gadda.”

Now, one of the main victims of the actions of “Charles Gadda” and the multiple aliases that the Manhattan DA says were allegedly the creations of Raphael Golb, Robert Cargill, has created a site tracking all the aliases. He titled it, appropriately enough, Who Is Charles Gadda. It is a comprehensive list of the known appearances, IP addresses, aliases (there are dozens and dozens) and other information related to this campaign to harass Dead Sea Scrolls scholars.

The alias “Charles Gadda” is one of over 80 known anonymous internet aliases dedicated to the advocacy and defense of the academic theories of Dr. Norman Golb, the Ludwig Rosenberger Professor of Jewish History and Civilization at the University of Chicago’s Oriental Institute. The puppet master behind alias “Charles Gadda” and the other aliases is engaged in a scorched earth campaign to criticize, libel, and defame any and all scholars involved in any manner with the study of the Dead Sea Scrolls, who do not accept the theories of Dr. Golb. Additionally, the puppet master has dedicated himself to an organized and systematic campaign of criticism of the traveling Dead Sea Scrolls exhibitions presently touring North America. While the alias “Charles Gadda” was not the puppet master’s first alias, he became the central alias due to his presence on the NowPublic website.

Raphael Golb is accused of going beyond these internet attacks and actually stealing the identity of one such scholar, Lawrence Schiffman, which is the reason for the criminal charges.

What about Norman Golb, the father? In the Chicago Tribune article he basically admits his son’s guilt.

“The fact of the matter is that if I understand it, Raphael was responding to the attacks on me,” Golb said from his university office. “I suppose my son felt it was important to get things straight.”

In other words, Norman is saying that Raphael did what he’s accused of doing. He was “responding” to attacks and “felt it was important to get things straight.” I hope Raphael’s lawyer doesn’t fire him as a client because his father just made the job of getting Raphael off the hook much harder. Based on our experience at Jewlicious, “Gadda” was a malicious and highly aggressive writer who was lying to get his point across.

Norman Golb also claims, amazingly, that the conspiracy has been directed against him and in the NY Times, he called his son “an honorable person.” Well, had Norman Golb seen what Charles Gadda did on his behalf, he would keep quiet because there are many people who have been victims of this slander and alleged criminal actions. If getting things “straight” means stealing people’s identities and calling them antisemites because their views don’t jibe with another scholar’s views, then perhaps Norman Golb needs a primer on basic civility. His son is about to get one from the Manhattan DA.

Update: Perhaps unaware that his father acknowledged that his “son felt it was important to get things straight,” Raphael Golb told a reporter that he was innocent.

Accused cyberbully Raphael Golb – who allegedly harassed the academic rivals of his father, a Dead Sea Scrolls scholar – emerged from Manhattan’s Tombs yesterday looking rumpled, tired and a little like an archeological artifact himself.

“I survived,” the exhausted Golb said of his first-ever night in jail, promising he’ll be vindicated on identity-theft and harassment charges that could put him in prison for up to four years if convicted.

New Update:
There is another admission by the father about Raphael Golb’s activities. This one does not acknowledge criminal behavior but does admit that he would write blogs to debate.

Golb’s father became short of breath when he was told of his son’s arrest yesterday. “I can’t believe this. I can’t. This is horrible,” he said on the phone from Chicago.

He said his son, who has a law degree from NYU and a Ph.D. from Harvard, “would never impersonate professor Schiffman or anyone else.”

“My dear son. He’s such a brilliant young man. He wouldn’t lie like this, first of all. There is something that’s been trumped up here,” he said.

Golb said he knew his son was a vigorous proponent of his views and would write blogs defending him and disagreeing with Schiffman.

“It was honest, straightforward debate,” he said.

The Who Is Charles Gadda page lists 14 blogs with FORTY SIX large blog entries created by this person. The 4 blog posts on two blogs mentioning plagiarism are the ones the father must be talking about. Is it really an honest and straightforward debate to accuse another scholar of plagiarism?

You do have to be pretty smart to get a doctorate from Harvard and pretty smart to earn a law degree from NYU. Raphael Golb had earned both. So even if he didn’t break the law and merely created many characters and blogs to attack others, why was he wasting his time on this? Why isn’t he writing a great novel, trying a great case in court or doing something meaningful?

Chomsky: Obama=Bush (!!)

Oh no! What's a "Progressive" to do?

On the one hand, the historic election of Barack Hussein Obama, as the US’s 44th President and the first black man to hold the nation’s highest office was seen by many as an event unlike no other. The election literally embodied it’s slogans of “Hope” and hoped for “Change.” Many on the left fought hard during Obama’s campaign and celebrated harder after his victory. But what about the living, breathing God’s of the far left? What do they have to say about the Senator from Illinois’ ascension to power?

Uh oh…

Noam Chomsky, MIT linguist extraordinaire, tireless critic of everything American, Buddhist of the neo-Bolsheviks and, along with Jerry Lewis, the only American beloved by the French intelligentsia, was asked about Obama’s Middle East Policy during an interview with the progressive radio talk show Democracy Now:

AMY GOODMAN: It’s good to have you with us. Well, let’s start off by your response to President Obama’s statement and whether you think it represents a change.

NOAM CHOMSKY: It’s approximately the Bush position. He began by saying that Israel, like any democracy, has a right to defend itself. That’s true, but there’s a gap in the reasoning. It has a right to defend itself. It doesn’t follow that it has a right to defend itself by force. So we might agree, say, that, you know, the British army in the United States in the colonies in 1776 had a right to defend itself from the terror of George Washington’s armies, which was quite real, but it didn’t follow they had a right to defend themselves by force, because they had no right to be here. So, yes, they had a right to defend themselves, and they had a way to do it—namely, leave.

Chomsky went on to, yawn-o-ramma, compare the Israelis to Nazis – and when asked about Hamas’ cynical and illegal use of civilians and civilian infrastructure as shields he quoted some 30 year old, out-of-context statement by Abba Eban without remotely addressing the crux of the question. It’s the same old tired crap we’ve come to expect from our cunning linguist from Massachussets, which can be summarized in 3 words (for the sake of brevity) – Israel Always Bad ™.

But wait, forget all that… Noam Chomsky said that Obama’s position on Gaza is “approximately Bush’s position.” So uh… what’s a progressive leftist to do? I mean these guys LOVE Obama… sometimes a little too much – witness fabulous actor, and fragrance spokesperson (Cumming – The Fragrance) Alan Cumming telling New York Magazine that he’d like to see Barack Obama naked:

I’d like to see Obama naked. I think great leaders, charismatic leaders and men who are so confident and who have achieved so much, usually have big penises. I think there’s a correlation between the level of confidence, the level of the way a man can hold a room and the way he conducts himself in life, with his penis size — with his comfort with his penis size. So much of male psyche is taken up with how big your cock is; it’s a huge deal in our lives, and so when you’re confident about your penis size, it shows. Well, just look at him. Just the way he’s so kind of elegant and very confident in his body and himself. Also, someone told me that they worked out with him in a gym in Chicago, and it was big.

So back to the main question. What do you do? Obama is cute, full of Hope and Change, and packin’ a little extra heat, but… BUT Noam Chomsky doesn’t like him. Seriously! What do you do? Me? I don’t know. Fucking kill yourself before your brain explodes from the stress of internal contradiction for all I care. That’s what you get for paying any attention at all to that limousine liberal, washed up, has been, old fart Chomsky.

Silencing Geert Wilders

Guest Post by David Kelsey.

Note: While I don’t necessarily agree with David’s ideas, he is a buddy and I do feel his concerns merit discussion. Jewlicious is, after all, all about the conversation! -ck

Geert Wilders. Source: AFP

Geert Wilders. Source: AFP

Holland, and of course, its signature city, Amsterdam, is well known as a place of tolerance. Many of us look to Amsterdam as the epitome of libertarian-socialism.

But the Dutch have their problems. And although the Dutch are themselves a tolerant people, they have a history of weakness when confronted by outsiders who seek to install tyranny. The Dutch did not resist the Nazis with the same fervor as segments of other European countries. Once again, the Dutch are demonstrating weakness against an enemy of western liberalism, and the Dutch are surrendering yet more territory and freedom to Islamicism.

Geert Wilders is to be prosecuted for insulting Islam. He is a resistor to the Islamicists’ dark vision of expansive Shariah Law, and at the center of this travesty of justice is a film Wilders produced warning of the true nature of the Islamicists’ vision, called “Fitna.”

The significance of his criminal prosecution is dire. As Rod Dreher wrote,

“The Dutch court’s action goes a long way toward vindicating Wilders’ claim that the Dutch are losing their freedoms and their democracy because of the Muslim presence among them.”

I would note that wherever there is a significant Muslim population in the West, there are significant problems. Jews must stop obstructing those who want to reform our outdated immigration policies. Social-liberals will and do pretend that I am claiming all or most Muslims are a threat. But I am not. It is never all, and it certainly need not be most. But the problems subsist, despite insistence from the Left that it is impolite and unfair to generalize. About non-white people, that is.

German Club Scene meets Jewlicious Festival

Jewdyssee, a German music project integrating traditional Yiddish music (aka Yiddishe Mama) into club beats, is will be taking the stage at Jewlicious Festival. Before their departure to the US I had a chance to interview them about their music.

Here is what they had to say about why they rock.

Your music fills a niche not only in Germany, but internationally, as this genre of traditional Yiddish music with club is pretty innovative. How do you hope your audience will react from listening to your music?

We want the people to leave our performance completely sweating, emotionally uplifted, excited and exhilarated after dancing all night long! If, as well as loving the music, having been exposed to something they have never heard before and it has raised their curiosity as to what the songs were about, then this would be a great sense of accomplishment.

“Jewdyssee is not about making a political or religious statement,” says Maya and Eina of the group. “We just want to show that our culture not only has a tragic history, but that there is a great wealth of music and culture to be celebrated and that this culture is a current part of our lives that we want to express and share.

We just want people to see that our Jewish culture is alive and strong. By giving the youth a voice, by bringing this music to new people, it is going to keep it alive.

Jewdysee will be playing the late slot at Jewlicious Festival’s Main Concert Stage, Saturday night, February 28th, 2009. For tickets and information visit JewliciousFestivals.com

Read the full interview on The Jew Spot here. While you’re at it, check out the music at www.Jewdyssee.com.

Cool Jew Book Chanukah Facebook Giveaway!

Lisa Alcalay Klug has been up and down the country recently pimping her latest work: Cool Jew: The Ultimate Guide For Every Member of the Tribe. The book has received mixed reviews (of course) with the penultimate manifestations of cool Jewyness, like Jewcy and Heeb, predictably roasting it. Sometimes it just sucks to look at the mirror I guess… but seriously, the notion of Judaism as being “cool” is ridiculous. The aforementioned post on Jewcy was titled “Hip-Hop Heeb Jumps the Shark.” For those of you that don’t understand the reference, Jumping the Shark is from an episode of 70s sitcom Happy Days. At the time it was mad popular and the leading character, the Fonz, played by Henry Winkler, had a signature thing he did – he would go “Eeeeeeh!” while holding up two thumbs. The “cool” kids in school would of course mimic this and that was considered cool. Of course now I would pay good money to see a video of a 12 year old Aryeh C_ or Eli P_ doing that on YouTube. But I digress.

As the popularity of Happy Days began to wane, the producers came up with the idea of having a two part episode where the Fonz would jump over a live man-eating shark, Evel Knievel style, but on waterskis. The build up to the show was tremendous but the episodes themselves were disappointing. Hence was born the term “Jumping the Shark” – signifying the end of popularity or relevance.

I think it’s safe to say, or at least one can always hope, that the trendy manifestations of the cool Jew movement, like the coolness of the Fonz, will eventually pass. What is sure to persevere however, is the enduring coolness of Judaism – think Clint Eastwood in “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.” The Cool Jew Book straddles the fence between these two, offering up an equal measures of kitschy, modern manifestations of Jewyness alongside more substantive Judaism. Like I said, Klug effectively holds up a mirror to an entire generation of young Jews. Some might not like the reflection that they see, but heck – the book’s a great joke – and the joke is on us!

Anyhow… Klug’s running a promo where she’s giving away one autographed copy of the book for every night of Chanukah. You can read the details on her book’s blog. Lisa has also decided to give away a copy of the book on December 25th, as a kind of Chrismukkah gift I guess, to a lucky Jewlicious reader. All you have to do to enter is to join the Jewlicious Facebook group where on Christmas morning, a lucky winner will be randomly selected to receive their awesomely cool Jew prize! Thanks Lisa Klug! Thanks Hanukkah Harry!

(CK has a lengthy back and forth after the comment which Muffti is WAY too lazy to read but you might enjoy.)

And, while this isn’t Jewlicious in any way. Muffti’s friend Shechar sent him the following stock tip:

Zohan and the Quest for Jewish Utopia

That’s the title of an essay by Michael B. Oren that appeared in the latest issue of Azure Online. Oren manages to weave together Herzl, the First Zionist Congress, Emma Lazarus, Henrietta Szold, the Union of Reform Congregations, David Ben Gurion, Golda Meir, Louis Brandeis, Michael Chabon and Adam Sandler’s character in last summer’s comedy blockbuster You Don’t Mess With the Zohan into an essay about the growing schism between Israel and the American diaspora in the much vaunted but mostly ill-defined post-Zionist era.

Oren provides a concise historical context as he describes the existential dilemma faced by many Jews in a world where America and Israel compete for the hearts and minds of the Jewish imagination. He talks about two other movie characters – Avner in Munich (2006) and Eyal in Walk on Water (2004), Israel’s highest grossing film ever.

[Both] are Mossad operatives who despair of the cyclical violence in their country and seek a way out. But while Eyal remains in Israel, Avner immigrates to Brooklyn—just like Zohan.

The decisions of Eyal on the one hand, and of Avner and Zohan on the other, represent far more than dramatic devices. Walk on Water was directed by an Israeli, Eytan Fox, while the other two films are products of American Jews. The choices made by their protagonists thus, to a great extent, reflect the gulf between Israeli and American Jewry over which community best guarantees Jewish survival—physical as well as spiritual—in a precarious, secular age. Which polity, these misleadingly superficial films ask, constitutes the sole Jewish utopia, the State of Israel or the United States? Which is the real Promised Land?

That is the question. Historically, many places other than the holy land have competed for the imagination of the Jewish people. Arguably, many of the greatest accomplishments of the Jewish people happened outside the confines of our holy land. However, Israel has always been our touchstone – the one place that we always longed for and called home – the focus of our yearnings and prayer. Oren does a great job fleshing out these issues without resorting to judgmental polemics. Me? I’ve made my choice. I’m off to the Kotel in a minute for Shabbat services. What are Jew doing tonight?

Read Oren’s article and let us know what you think.

Obama and Hillary

I don’t usually follow Shmuel Rosner. I’m not sure why, it’s more a lack of chemistry with his writing style and ideas than any ill feelings about him. Today he published an interesting essay in Slate where he claims that only wishful thinking accepts that Hillary as Secretary of State in Obama’s Presidency will work. He says there are so many obstacles to a successful working relationship that it’s unlikely that they will succeed in working together effectively. He concludes by noting that perhaps they each believe that the can drive forward together pragmatically to success.

I guess I’m one of those with rose-colored glasses. It seems to me these two people were among two of the finest candidates for President who we’ve seen run for this office in a very long time. They are intelligent, knowledgeable and clearly able to read other people and find ways to work with them. They are also both driven by a sense of mission to help the United States. I can’t imagine that they won’t act in a mature way and as a team. In fact, I bet they have already discussed how this relationship was going to work and my supposition is that Hillary accepted that Obama has the last word.

Rather than be afraid at having strong people at the top, it is precisely the confidence Obama is showing in putting in strong people into critical slots in his administration, that makes me believe his objectives are positive and that he intends to succeed at working with these people as partners not as underlings.

Everybody recognizes just how much repair work has to be done to undo some of the massive errors of the last few years. Having a strong President with weak underlings is not the recipe for success when the challenges are so great and so many in number.

I think Obama and Hillary will work swimmingly well together.
