But how do you make that happen? You need to book your room now at the Queen Mary. As things inch closer, we are getting a lot of questions about the hotel – the good news is there are still some rooms left – you have to CALL to get them and make sure to ask for the Jewlicious Rate. We advise you to do this asap as the rooms tend to sell out.

(Los Angeles, CA) The most popular Jewish group blog, Jewlicious.com, has blackened out its logo in solidarity with web giants Facebook and Google, in showing opposition to SOPA legislation now being discussed in Congress.

SOPA legislation could infringe on Jewlicious’s attempt to bring a hip, clever, and diverse look at the Jewish world. Jewlicious notes that while some Jewish members of the Senate and Congress are supporting SOPA, surveys of American Jews nationwide would likely show widespread opposition to SOPA.

In response to the debate about SOPA, Jewlicious Director of Media and International Projects, David Abitbol, commented, “We blackened the masthead of Jewlicious in solidarity with 40 of the largest Internet sites that oppose SOPA. We hope that sends a message to Congress.”

Rabbi Yonah Bookstein, Jewlicious Executive Director remarked, “What would Moses do about SOPA? I think that Moses would be against this particular way of regulating the piracy of content on the Internet. Judaism strictly forbids theft, but it also has clear definitions of liability which could be circumvented by overly zealous authorities.”

Some say it’s haunted. Some say it’s a masterpiece of Art Deco decor. Some say it is one of the finest ocean going liners ever built in the 20th Century. Whatever you want to believe about the RMS Queen Mary, it is one of the coolest places to do a fest. Roam the amazing decks and sumptuous halls. Enjoy bars, and views. Take the haunted boat tour. And of course, the original and compelling food, music and programming that Jewlicious Festival is famous for.

Before there were a bevy of imitators, Jewlicious Festival originated a unique blend of programming music and fun, that simply is unlike anything else at this price. Thanks to very generous donors, we can offer the Festival for a fee that is simply a steal. Everyone will be there – will you?

We’re on a Boat! Our 8th Annual Jewlicious Festival, taking place between the 24th-26th of February 2012, will be held on the historic cruise ship, The Queen Mary, docked on Long Beach Harbor. Young adults from around the USA we will have the full run of the ship (ghosts included).

This will undoubtedly be the most memorable Festival yet! Did we mention that it’s on a boat? A really BIG boat? Bigger than the Titanic even! This new venue allows for all kinds of exciting programming possibilities and the entire ship is amazing to explore. We have negotiated great rates on cabins for 2/3/4 people to stay on board in the Queen Mary Hotel starting at a very affordable $99. These actual cabins were used for transatlantic voyages in the 1920s and 1930s and are updated with flat-screen TV’s and all the usual luxury amenities. Pre-sale Festival tickets are just $36 as long as supplies last. So grab a ticket and come aboard!

We will be rolling out lists of presenters, sponsors, and most importantly musical artists starting in January. But don’t let that get in the way of you ordering a PRESALE!

Tickets below!

I am currently 10,000 plus feet in the air on some go go flight 15 dollar Internet shenanigan and after speaking with Rabbi Yonah at many of his amazing Shabbat dinners, I feel its time to introduce myself more to what Kosha Dillz is in his own Jewish identity. Yes I am Jewish. Its funny that this question was asked to me at Jewlicious multiple times.

As many of you know, I have been playing the Jewlicious Festival for a few years, and even when I wasn’t, I decided still to go and play for like a freestyle. I remember I did not know Rabbi Yonah then but I recall showing up in my Nisaan Pathfinder, (which is now humbly parked in a Korea Town parking garage ) unloaded my merchandise and slept under a table in the concert hall where I recently played.

And so with actions like this, I have been labeled as a hustler. Sure its a good thing if you are Larry Flynt, or a hardcore hip hop aficionado, but I’d rather be known (or at least paid more) as a gentleman, a scholar, a curator, and man who transcends boundaries rather than crosses.

A man who runs around and raps sounds like he is on some sort of rap drug. Me on the other hand, I have a plan behind it as a purpose within the Jewish context of Kosha Dillz. Yes there is a deep spiritual meaning behind the ambiguous name and attitude. I bet you are crawling out your seat to see examples.

We need to push ourselves in being independent, as Jews have been since the eternity of time. Being an independent salesman is hard in a field that no one has embarked on . The Jewish rapper who sleeps on floors and needs to sell cds for a living. I want Jews to feel my story and sometimes you don’t want to support my mission. Its ok. I shall be patient I still love you.

Here comes some Jewish rapper guy that’s weird rapping in Hebrew and keeps bothering me. Boy do I hate this guy> i just want to be in my shell because I have other weird Jewish issues I can’t talk to anyone about. Let me put this man Kosha Dillz down and call people to tell them he is annoying, aka he contacted me for a show three times, he HUSTLES aka lets treat him as the Hebrew Uncle Stalker that Lonely Elephant is Stupid!

Kosha you are close. Its o.k. to push and hustle like a mad man. You are a hustler. A great one. You are key to survival 10 people will listen but 5 will say stuff about you that is bad but 10 really support. How Under Scrutiny the Love eludes Rami. People love you but sometimes i forget to acknowledge i only need the approval from G-d himself.

In benefit of winning over a confused Jewish person, or someone who is detached form their own heritage and own birthright, I do things for free because I love being Jewish so much. As a hustler, you never want to do something for free. But then I think of Rabbi’s and programs who literally have to give Jews a bunch of money to do something Jewish, while other faiths like Christianity make you pay $3000 for a trip to Jerusalem, we pay our kids to go and feed them 3 times a day.

Heal up Slowly than Lower every dollar. It hurts that sometimes they don’t believe but we cannot force anyone to do anything they want. Lets just give away a bunch of free stuff so we can do something great in God’s eyes and bring Jews together. Even if it they are not a Jew, let them see what Kosha Dillz is really about and give them a different story they are not used to.

I don’t have a beard. I have a checkered past. I work for myself. I just started dating Jewish girls. Why is my story not as inspiring as others? it is my friends. My journey is too, all you have to do is a have a little trust and I am willing to wait.

In the rap world, you would never think to see the day. I recently was called up to Play Hip Hop Hanukkah with Hot 97 morning show host Peter Rosenberg at the legendary SOBS on De 15th. Do I feel that this is a great chance to play a Jewish event? It’s not a Jewish event. Most people at a hip hop Hanukkah will not be Jewish. THh performers are signed to labels like Stones Throw and Shady Records w/ Eminem. Action Bronson, who is half Jewish/Albanian, has a song called Muslim Wedding and raps about Jewish Mothers. Peter Rosenberg, the face of NYC music, is changing the game by being the Jew on the morning show.

I guess the point of this article is like, why Judge?

Why aren’t there more Jews at my events to really start a movement of supporting the people for where they are at in the journey? Being distant from us or anyone for that matter is the most driving force to keep those relationships far from a bond that could be shared. Just because i don’t have tzit tzit on or a long beard or yarmulke, doesn’t mean my mission is any different. Please remember that when my family was killed as was yours in the holocaust, they didn’t pick and choose neither. Everyone was equal.

respectfully requesting more yarmulke

As the sun sets on Wednesday, October 12th, the Jewish community begins the Festival of Sukkot, a spiritual harvest festival commemorating the historic journey of the ancient Hebrews across the desert, the bounty of the fall harvest, and our reliance on God. However, Sukkot is much more than a way to commemorate this ancient journey, it evens the playing field between rich and poor.

Firstly, why do Jews rough it in the Sukkah for the Festival? Wouldn’t it make more sense to celebrate in a pub, club, or frat house?

On Sukkot there is a special mitzvah, an obligation, to rejoice and be happy. What makes me truly happy? Is it a new car, season premiers or the iPhone 4S? Sukkot is a remedy for my faith in possessions to make me happy. Surrounded by the walls of our temporary dwelling place, I remind myself that focusing on our friends, family and relationship with God can sustain my happiness.

More recently, as Jewish communities do not feel the constant threat of tyrants and anti-Semitism, Sukkot encourages me to help the many people who live on a constant basis without permanent shelter.

Another deeper lesson of Sukkot can best be understood by another name of the Festival. The holiday of Sukkot is also called the Festival of the Harvest – commemorating the time when we gather our crops and fill our storehouses.

If one has been blessed — our profits outweigh our expenditures, our portfolio has grown and our wine cellars are full and satisfaction and trust fill our soul — it is at that moment that the Torah tells us to leave our home and dwell in a Sukkah. The frail booth teaches us that neither wealth, good investments, IRA’s or even real-estate are life’s safeguards. It is God who sustains us all, those in palaces and those in tents. Any glory or wealth we posses came to us from God, and will endure so long as it is God’s will.

And if our toil has not resulted in great blessing — our investments went south, we lost our job and nest-egg, our cellars are empty, and we face the approaching winter with mounting debt and bills, living off credit from month to month, forlorn and fearful for how we will survive— then as we enter the sukkah we find rest for our troubled soul. Divine providence is more reliable than worldly wealth which can vanish in an instant. The sukkah will renew our strength and courage, and teach and inspire us with joy and perseverance even in the face of affliction and hardship.

Sukkot humbles the rich, for it can vanish in an instant. Comforts the Poor, a week to enjoy the embrace of the sukkah.

Sukkot hit at an interesting time, just as #OccupyAmerica is gaining steam.

I must admit, I was skeptical that the rag-tag protests that started in NYC would spread as fast as they have. But as we saw with 1968, and now in 2011, protests in one country can easily spill over to other countries. Now protests in one city, have spread around the country.

Led by idealistic young people intent on changing the status quo we are on the cusp of nationwide upheaval. Lack of jobs, corporate greed and government corruption are at the top of the lists of complaints.

As the protests in intensify, I have compiled these 20 tweetable lessons from my years in non-violent protests and movements. Please feel free to tweet and Facebook these.

1) The police are not an enemy, treat them like friends, they are just doing their job #occupywallstreet

2) Non-violence means non-violence. Never use violence, even when treated with violence. No broken windows! #occupywallstreet

3) NEVER resist arrest. Just go limp. #occupywallstreet

4) Plane arrests to happen on your terms. #occupywallstreet

5) Singing is always heard louder than shouting #occupywallstreet

6) Treat each other with love and respect, even when you have disagreements on tactics #occupywallstreet

7) Change takes time and patience, one march cannot change the world, but 1,000 will. #occupywallstreet

Appoint spokespeople for media, and don’t claim to speak for everyone unless you do. #occupywallstreet

9) VERY important – you need marked peacekeepers to intervene btw cops and protestors #occupywallstreet

10) Handout rules of non-violence to everyone, tweet them, text them, live them #occupywallstreet

11) Don’t dehumanize your opponents, teach them #occupywallstreet

12) Don’t demonize the media, get them on your side. #occupywallstreet

13) Keep your eye on the prize, don’t be distracted by counter-protestors #occupywallstreet

14) Never give over to hate and anger, love looks better on TV #occupywallstreet

15) Be considerate of everyones personal space, including guys in suits. #occupywallstreet

16) Signs work. Signs that can be read from far away work really well. #occupywallstreet

17) Don’t make it “us against them.” We all need to find a way in this world together. #occupywallstreet

18) Encourage clergy to join you by being peaceful. People will notice. (think MLK) #occupywallstreet

19) Act righteously if your cause is righteous #occupywallstreet

20) 450,000 Israelis marched peacefully. Learn from them. #occupywallstreet

What did YOU do last weekend?

I have no clue about you, but I do know how about 150 college students and young adults spent the weekend at the 2nd Annual Camp Jewlicious at the Brandeis Bardin Institute in Simi Valley, CA. They swam, rode mountain bikes, climbed walls, rappelled, rode horses, tie dyed t-shirts, enjoyed Shabbat, had some great conversations, enjoyed some excellent speakers, made candles, baked challah, enjoyed some great music and generally partied like rock stars. Well, I mean if rock stars partied on lush 3000 acre properties amongst pheasants, squirrels, lizards and coyotes.

Camp Jewlicious was fun, meaningful and a great experience all around. Big ups go out to our entertainers: Rav Shmuel, Natan Winkler, Mikey Pauker, Josh Kramon, Hyim and DJ Shachar; Big ups also to our staff and volunteers as well as the staff at Brandeis Bardin. But mostly, a big thanks to our participants. OK, I know that’s kind of odd. I mean we worked hard and they reaped the benefits by simply showing up and enjoying the program, so why thank them? I guess it’s because we work hard for them, and when they show up and enjoy themselves, it’s like instant validation, a direct shot of dopamine to our collective cerebral cortex.

But yeah, don’t take my word for it. Check out all the photos on Flickr below. People seem to be having a good time, right? Right!

Out of control awesomeness. What else is there to say? Participants enjoyed all the usual camp-like activity, from bonfire sing alongs to an outdoor screening of the Rocky Horror Picture Show; from horseback riding and rock climbing to Israeli dancing, tie dying, candle making, ultimate, basketball… and more. We have participants from New York, LA, San Diego, Las Vegas, you name it. We have roasted marshmallows, smores, quiche and lemon scented cranberry risotto. The setting, the Brandeis Bardin Institute, remains breathtakingly… well, breathtaking. Above and beyond all that, I’ve had some awesome conversations with participants wherein we plot the take over of the organized Jewish community, contemplate the nature, scope and implementation of grass roots organizational methodology and try to decide what brand of energy drink to consume next.

Not here? Sucks to be you…

This is all SO trippy. Really. I mean there are all kinds of Jews here, in true Jewlicious style. While outsiders accuse us of being alternatively a kiruv organization and/or a group of sex-crazed degenerates, the participants here simply don’t give a shit. The fall of JDub and the implications for the future or innovative programing? Don’t give a shit. The role of the JFNA in the future of the organized Jewish community? Don’t give a shit. The last 30 articles in eJewish Philanthropy? No offense Dan, they just don’t give a shit.

Why? Maybe they’re too busy having fun? Maybe the sorts of problems that the Jewish community is all obsessed about are issues that don’t seem to exist here? Jewish unity? Check. Vibrant connections to Judaism? Check. Multiple avenues to engagement? Just another day in the world of Jewlicious.

Whatever. I hope you have an awesome and meaningful sabbath. I know we will.

Tomorrow, I will be attending summer camp.

However, Camp Jewlcious is not your typical summer camp in LA. For starters, the average age of the campers is 25. There are no counsellors, visitor’s day, curfews, or color-wars and camp lasts only four days. Instead of sing-a-longs, there are rock concerts. Cabin raids have been replaced by cabin parties. In fact, many of the things which might have gotten you kicked out of camp as a kid are now permitted.

The evolution of Camp Jewlicious starts with my experiences at the largest summer music festivals across Europe and the States. These festivals collectively attract millions of young adults annually. I dreamt that perhaps one day we could create a summer music festival for Jewish young adults. We would invite Jewish performers, find a rural setting with space for camping out, simultaneous performances, and space for communal meals.

Instead of Shabbat being something that we did between sets alongside the blaring music, Shabbat would be a day of alternative programming like during summer camp. We would provide yoga, hikes, meditation, discussion groups, Sabbath services of different flavors and many other programs. Havdallah would be celebrated around a massive bonfire with singing and dancing, and then just like that the music would start again. The festival would be a fusion of summer camp and a music festival. In fact there were already two other summer music festivals reminiscent of camp, “Summer Camp” near Chicago” and “Camp Bisco” in upstate New York.

This dream of starting a summer music and camping festival did not surprise my wife Rachel.

Our experience showed that festival weekends are trans-formative experiences which transcend differences and strengthen the identity of the participants. We started organizing the Jewlicious Festival for specifically this reason in 2005 when Rachel was director of Long Beach Hillel. Jewlicious Festival today attracts a thousand young adults from twenty states. Co-created with an organizing committee of young adults, the festival celebrates all things Jewish with concerts, workshops, films, over fifty presenters and has been described by one participant as “a weekend unlike any other in Jewish history.”

Academic investigations of music festivals explain why the Festival has been so successful in its mission. According to one recent studies published by Jan Packer and Julie Ballantyne last year, the festival a young person chooses says something about their identity. It provides “a new social context removed from the expectations and routines of everyday life..and allows participants to reflect and re-evaluate their own self-understand and self-acceptance.”

Young people don’t go to festivals for the music, “they go,” said Prof. George McKay author of Glastonbury, “because of the mass experience, the event itself. It fulfills a basic human need that many of us want to surround ourselves with like-minded people at festivals – it’s life affirming.”

“For some, membership of a tribe gives them self esteem,” says Prof. Adrian North, “if you are with people you think are cool it reaffirms your own lifestyle choices – you’re basically patting yourself on the back.”

With communal disaffection for young Jews at an all time low — young Jews need a pat on the back more than ever. According to studies, most of these young Jews are not interested in communal life, not sure about Israel, not likely to raise a Jewish family. But they are interested in life-affirming experiences, festivals, music, culture, and membership in a tribe – precisely the elements that make summer music festivals so attractive. When young Jews come together at a Jewish festival it reaffirms and strengthens their own Jewish identity – and we have a lot of fun.

Thanks to support from generous sponsors, our summer camp music festival is not just a dream. Camp Jewlicious, a mashup of a Coachella, summer camp and Dirty Dancing, is a potent reaffirmation of Jewish identity which is fun, meaningful, and bound to impact the Jewish future in creative and positive ways.

Hundreds of hours of travelling, pay-less gigs, bouts of depression, luck, and hard work. This is the backdrop for a new documentary about <a href="href="http://www.koshadillzworld.com/">Kosha Dillz,”Kosha Dillz Is Everywhere”. Kosh— who will be on the Vans Warped Tour starting next week — is a regular at Jewlicious Festivals, having performed handful of times, always managing to pump up the audience and deliver. Recently with Shemspeed, JConnetla and Kosha, Jewlicious created the only independent Yom Haaztmaut musical celebration in LA this year,a Hip Hop Salute To Israel, which brought out all kinds of rappers, and hundreds of people to support Israel’s birthday.

The documentary trailer is a great look at what a musician does to make it today. As <a href="href="http://www.slashfilm.com/week-trailers-fake-real-moments-fiction-don-2-kosha-dillz-rise-shine-jay-demerit-story/">Christopher Stipp writes in Slashfilms:

this is a trailer that gets to the heart of what any struggling musician, who’s worth the effort, is doing in order to have their thumbtack placed on the map of great musical legends. I walked away from this inspired that no matter what happens, as long you keep fighting and struggling and making noise in order to be heard there’s bound to be someone listening.

(Cross-posted at JewishJournal.com)

I often ask myself, what would Abraham and Sarah do today?

Where would they set up their tent?

One of the places that I am sure they would be is this weekend, is in Watkins Glen, New York, hanging out with tens of thousands of groupies of the band Phish.

I’ll be helping to lead Shabbat services and hospitality somewhere in the midst of Phish Super Ball IX, one of the summer’s biggest music and camping festivals.

There will be tents of all shades and colors and sizes. Large colorful flags flying in the wind. Streams of people in all manner of costumes and garb, will be winding their way through a maze of cars and canopies, BBQ’s and drum circles, and enough tie-dyes to make the 60’s jealous.

The festival is built around the band Phish, a touring rock band, that can only be compared to the Grateful Dead in terms of the scope of their influence. But you can read about Phish online.

The Shabbat Tent — also known as Shabbos Tent to those Ashkenazically inclined — was born at Phish’s New Year’s Millennium Show on Big Cyprus Indian Reservation, FL in 2000. Jews from all walks of life participated in the inaugural year, and a tradition was born.

Shabbat Tent’s profile was raised through the roof when MATISYAHU hosted Shabbat Tent at Bonnaroo in Tennassee, and subsequently at Wakarusa in Arkansas, Langerado in Florida, and other festivals. The Shabbat Tent team has also created Shabbat hospitality at Southern California’s premier festival, Coachella, Gathering of the Vibes in the North East and dozens of Phish concerts around the country.

Our Shabbat Tent at Watkins Glenn will provide the overly represented number of Jews at Phish shows a place to celebrate Shabbat in whatever capacity they find meaningful.

We’ll provide a vegan and kosher food for the Friday night dinner for 300 to 500, a Saturday kiddush, a third meal for 200 to 300 people and continuous snacks. There will be a Carlebach-style Kabbalat Shabbat, Torah reading on Saturday and a musical Havdalah.

I will join a dozen other friendly volunteers from around the country “that love music and Judaism,” in the words of one volunteer, “and want to help make the world a better place.” (There are actually more volunteers and willing participants to do this around the country than there are funds to coordinate and sponsor.)

I picture our mission as creating a mobile Abraham & Sarah tent, a place for people to share Shabbat, with food, song, prayer and good vibes as part of the general festival experience.

Unlike Christian missionary tents, buses and installations, our Shabbat Tent is not a place for preaching of religion or Jewish missionary work. Shabbat Tent is also open to anyone, without regard for religion, ethnicity, or background, who wish to spend time in the tent.

We will let you know the exact location of the Shabbat Tent on our Facebook page, website, and via Twitter.

Then there is the obvious question: Why are so many Jews seem drawn to festival-friendly music and Phish in particular?

My research shows that Jews are drawn to transcendent collective experiences. Really, it makes sense because our collective Jewish consciousness began 3,500 years ago in the Sinai desert — at a camping festival —and it’s continued throughout our history.

The three major Jewish festivals — Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot — were times of mass pilgrimage, camping, and music too. So it’s not surprising that we are drawn to these festivals in great numbers, because it is a part of being Jewish to want to connect and transcend our individuality with others.

Jewlicious, the organization that I direct, started a Jewish camping and music festival last summer called Camp Jewlicious at Brandeis Bardin. The aim of Camp Jewlicious is not unlike other festivals, and we will be hosting hundreds of people in bunks, tents, and cottages throughout the Brandeis campus for four days of music, outdoor activities, and camp fun. Our goal is to create the biggest Jewish music and camping festival in America. Israelis have many such festivals, Bombamella being the biggest with 20,000 or more people annually.

If you are interested in more of the history and philosophy and logistics of our Shabbat Tent, check out a great article about this year’s Shabbat Tent at Phish Festival published by Josh Fleet in The Jewish Week.

Stay tuned for another update soon.

Peace and Blessings.
