But how do you make that happen? You need to book your room now at the Queen Mary. As things inch closer, we are getting a lot of questions about the hotel – the good news is there are still some rooms left – you have to CALL to get them and make sure to ask for the Jewlicious Rate. We advise you to do this asap as the rooms tend to sell out.

We’re on a Boat! Our 8th Annual Jewlicious Festival, taking place between the 24th-26th of February 2012, will be held on the historic cruise ship, The Queen Mary, docked on Long Beach Harbor. Young adults from around the USA we will have the full run of the ship (ghosts included).

This will undoubtedly be the most memorable Festival yet! Did we mention that it’s on a boat? A really BIG boat? Bigger than the Titanic even! This new venue allows for all kinds of exciting programming possibilities and the entire ship is amazing to explore. We have negotiated great rates on cabins for 2/3/4 people to stay on board in the Queen Mary Hotel starting at a very affordable $99. These actual cabins were used for transatlantic voyages in the 1920s and 1930s and are updated with flat-screen TV’s and all the usual luxury amenities. Pre-sale Festival tickets are just $36 as long as supplies last. So grab a ticket and come aboard!

We will be rolling out lists of presenters, sponsors, and most importantly musical artists starting in January. But don’t let that get in the way of you ordering a PRESALE!

Tickets below!

I am currently 10,000 plus feet in the air on some go go flight 15 dollar Internet shenanigan and after speaking with Rabbi Yonah at many of his amazing Shabbat dinners, I feel its time to introduce myself more to what Kosha Dillz is in his own Jewish identity. Yes I am Jewish. Its funny that this question was asked to me at Jewlicious multiple times.

As many of you know, I have been playing the Jewlicious Festival for a few years, and even when I wasn’t, I decided still to go and play for like a freestyle. I remember I did not know Rabbi Yonah then but I recall showing up in my Nisaan Pathfinder, (which is now humbly parked in a Korea Town parking garage ) unloaded my merchandise and slept under a table in the concert hall where I recently played.

And so with actions like this, I have been labeled as a hustler. Sure its a good thing if you are Larry Flynt, or a hardcore hip hop aficionado, but I’d rather be known (or at least paid more) as a gentleman, a scholar, a curator, and man who transcends boundaries rather than crosses.

A man who runs around and raps sounds like he is on some sort of rap drug. Me on the other hand, I have a plan behind it as a purpose within the Jewish context of Kosha Dillz. Yes there is a deep spiritual meaning behind the ambiguous name and attitude. I bet you are crawling out your seat to see examples.

We need to push ourselves in being independent, as Jews have been since the eternity of time. Being an independent salesman is hard in a field that no one has embarked on . The Jewish rapper who sleeps on floors and needs to sell cds for a living. I want Jews to feel my story and sometimes you don’t want to support my mission. Its ok. I shall be patient I still love you.

Here comes some Jewish rapper guy that’s weird rapping in Hebrew and keeps bothering me. Boy do I hate this guy> i just want to be in my shell because I have other weird Jewish issues I can’t talk to anyone about. Let me put this man Kosha Dillz down and call people to tell them he is annoying, aka he contacted me for a show three times, he HUSTLES aka lets treat him as the Hebrew Uncle Stalker that Lonely Elephant is Stupid!

Kosha you are close. Its o.k. to push and hustle like a mad man. You are a hustler. A great one. You are key to survival 10 people will listen but 5 will say stuff about you that is bad but 10 really support. How Under Scrutiny the Love eludes Rami. People love you but sometimes i forget to acknowledge i only need the approval from G-d himself.

In benefit of winning over a confused Jewish person, or someone who is detached form their own heritage and own birthright, I do things for free because I love being Jewish so much. As a hustler, you never want to do something for free. But then I think of Rabbi’s and programs who literally have to give Jews a bunch of money to do something Jewish, while other faiths like Christianity make you pay $3000 for a trip to Jerusalem, we pay our kids to go and feed them 3 times a day.

Heal up Slowly than Lower every dollar. It hurts that sometimes they don’t believe but we cannot force anyone to do anything they want. Lets just give away a bunch of free stuff so we can do something great in God’s eyes and bring Jews together. Even if it they are not a Jew, let them see what Kosha Dillz is really about and give them a different story they are not used to.

I don’t have a beard. I have a checkered past. I work for myself. I just started dating Jewish girls. Why is my story not as inspiring as others? it is my friends. My journey is too, all you have to do is a have a little trust and I am willing to wait.

In the rap world, you would never think to see the day. I recently was called up to Play Hip Hop Hanukkah with Hot 97 morning show host Peter Rosenberg at the legendary SOBS on De 15th. Do I feel that this is a great chance to play a Jewish event? It’s not a Jewish event. Most people at a hip hop Hanukkah will not be Jewish. THh performers are signed to labels like Stones Throw and Shady Records w/ Eminem. Action Bronson, who is half Jewish/Albanian, has a song called Muslim Wedding and raps about Jewish Mothers. Peter Rosenberg, the face of NYC music, is changing the game by being the Jew on the morning show.

I guess the point of this article is like, why Judge?

Why aren’t there more Jews at my events to really start a movement of supporting the people for where they are at in the journey? Being distant from us or anyone for that matter is the most driving force to keep those relationships far from a bond that could be shared. Just because i don’t have tzit tzit on or a long beard or yarmulke, doesn’t mean my mission is any different. Please remember that when my family was killed as was yours in the holocaust, they didn’t pick and choose neither. Everyone was equal.

respectfully requesting more yarmulke

(Cross-posted on Huffpost.com)

The story of creation begins again this week in synagogues around the world. The Jewish people make a global reset and roll-back our Torah scrolls. Fresh and new, our world is set in motion with organic divine harmony, only to be disrupted by human folly.

This annual cosmic rewind and the rereading of Genesis gives each of us a chance to deepen our thinking about the stories we heard as children about the dangers of snakes and fruit trees, about curiosity and sibling rivalry. The sages enjoined us to reread the Torah and look at it with fresh eyes in every generation, freeing us to be creative while demanding our direct engagement with the text.

This year, what comes to my mind after a successful and inspiring Jewlicious Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Days of Awesome experience is how much those involved with the Jewish community, and those on the periphery, want to connect to something enduring in the face of an uncertain economic future. I see young Jews more willing to revisit ageless questions about the meaning of life, and less satisfied with traditional ways of experiencing our highest holy days.

With this in mind, I opened the Torah to reflect upon the connection of Genesis, a new year, the Arab spring, European summer and the growing season of discontent branded an American autumn. What I found in this fresh reading of Genesis is the far-reaching effects of personal and collective responsibility.

When confronted with the result of our actions in Eden, and even afterward, humanity quickly began pointing fingers. No one wanted to accept responsibility for breaking the matrix that kept the world in a state of harmony. Not Adam. Not Eve. Not Cain. No one would own up to their lust for personal gain – even at the expense of others.

Instead, we are introduced to how humanity upset God’s perfect world with dishonesty, withholding information, jealousy and accusations.

Jewish tradition teaches that God created the world to infuse it with goodness. However, this stands in contrast to the world we see. Even with the rose-colored glasses of privilege and faith in humankind, we have to admit that the world is full of misery and suffering. Finding God in this mess becomes difficult, if not impossible, for many of us.

The Jewish mission of repairing the world, tikkun olam, uncovers the goodness God uses to sustain the world. Healing wrongs, promoting justice, equality and sustainability becomes a process of repairing creation. Tikkun olam taps into a deep-seated yearning for a revealed world of goodness, a return to Eden, and why so many of my tribe are drawn to movements for social change.

These latest movements for vast social change on the left and right can learn an important lesson from this week’s portion. They can learn that a critical mistake for which humanity was expelled from Eden in the first place, and one of the ills that affects our collective future, is a failure to accept personal responsibility for our actions.

What I see in the latest activist movement, Occupy Wall Street, is in some way a manifestation of a primal yearning for a world in balance that we see at the start of Genesis. The economic disparity and disillusionment that seems to be at the heart of this social upheaval is led by young people who yearn for myriad causes, some contradictory and some difficult to ascertain. Yet at the core is a yearning for an “Eden” world, a world that is healed and at peace. It’s a beautiful mission that hearkens to our yearning for redemption. Therefore, I hesitate to dismiss the eruption of protests across the United States and now in Europe as a pointless exercise in anarchy, hypocrisy, or a new call to eat the rich.

Occupy Wall Street understands that this millennial generation is not responsible for the mess we are in. This generation knows they are not responsible for setting up the systems that are broken. Yet they feel compelled to do something about it.

Yet I also hear the message from some Occupy folks as recognizing that they, like most of us, are marked by the faults of this generation. Facing the reality that they too have been complicit in the errors of this generation – such as vanity, apathy, materialism and a lack of acceptance of responsibility.

Genesis falls on the heels of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. These Days of Awe are a process of owning up to our communal shortcomings and asking God’s assistance in helping fix them. It requires us to accept responsibility for our own mistakes, and the mistakes of our entire community and the world. Only then can we begin to start over.

Tomorrow, I will be attending summer camp.

However, Camp Jewlcious is not your typical summer camp in LA. For starters, the average age of the campers is 25. There are no counsellors, visitor’s day, curfews, or color-wars and camp lasts only four days. Instead of sing-a-longs, there are rock concerts. Cabin raids have been replaced by cabin parties. In fact, many of the things which might have gotten you kicked out of camp as a kid are now permitted.

The evolution of Camp Jewlicious starts with my experiences at the largest summer music festivals across Europe and the States. These festivals collectively attract millions of young adults annually. I dreamt that perhaps one day we could create a summer music festival for Jewish young adults. We would invite Jewish performers, find a rural setting with space for camping out, simultaneous performances, and space for communal meals.

Instead of Shabbat being something that we did between sets alongside the blaring music, Shabbat would be a day of alternative programming like during summer camp. We would provide yoga, hikes, meditation, discussion groups, Sabbath services of different flavors and many other programs. Havdallah would be celebrated around a massive bonfire with singing and dancing, and then just like that the music would start again. The festival would be a fusion of summer camp and a music festival. In fact there were already two other summer music festivals reminiscent of camp, “Summer Camp” near Chicago” and “Camp Bisco” in upstate New York.

This dream of starting a summer music and camping festival did not surprise my wife Rachel.

Our experience showed that festival weekends are trans-formative experiences which transcend differences and strengthen the identity of the participants. We started organizing the Jewlicious Festival for specifically this reason in 2005 when Rachel was director of Long Beach Hillel. Jewlicious Festival today attracts a thousand young adults from twenty states. Co-created with an organizing committee of young adults, the festival celebrates all things Jewish with concerts, workshops, films, over fifty presenters and has been described by one participant as “a weekend unlike any other in Jewish history.”

Academic investigations of music festivals explain why the Festival has been so successful in its mission. According to one recent studies published by Jan Packer and Julie Ballantyne last year, the festival a young person chooses says something about their identity. It provides “a new social context removed from the expectations and routines of everyday life..and allows participants to reflect and re-evaluate their own self-understand and self-acceptance.”

Young people don’t go to festivals for the music, “they go,” said Prof. George McKay author of Glastonbury, “because of the mass experience, the event itself. It fulfills a basic human need that many of us want to surround ourselves with like-minded people at festivals – it’s life affirming.”

“For some, membership of a tribe gives them self esteem,” says Prof. Adrian North, “if you are with people you think are cool it reaffirms your own lifestyle choices – you’re basically patting yourself on the back.”

With communal disaffection for young Jews at an all time low — young Jews need a pat on the back more than ever. According to studies, most of these young Jews are not interested in communal life, not sure about Israel, not likely to raise a Jewish family. But they are interested in life-affirming experiences, festivals, music, culture, and membership in a tribe – precisely the elements that make summer music festivals so attractive. When young Jews come together at a Jewish festival it reaffirms and strengthens their own Jewish identity – and we have a lot of fun.

Thanks to support from generous sponsors, our summer camp music festival is not just a dream. Camp Jewlicious, a mashup of a Coachella, summer camp and Dirty Dancing, is a potent reaffirmation of Jewish identity which is fun, meaningful, and bound to impact the Jewish future in creative and positive ways.

Hundreds of hours of travelling, pay-less gigs, bouts of depression, luck, and hard work. This is the backdrop for a new documentary about <a href="href="http://www.koshadillzworld.com/">Kosha Dillz,”Kosha Dillz Is Everywhere”. Kosh— who will be on the Vans Warped Tour starting next week — is a regular at Jewlicious Festivals, having performed handful of times, always managing to pump up the audience and deliver. Recently with Shemspeed, JConnetla and Kosha, Jewlicious created the only independent Yom Haaztmaut musical celebration in LA this year,a Hip Hop Salute To Israel, which brought out all kinds of rappers, and hundreds of people to support Israel’s birthday.

The documentary trailer is a great look at what a musician does to make it today. As <a href="href="http://www.slashfilm.com/week-trailers-fake-real-moments-fiction-don-2-kosha-dillz-rise-shine-jay-demerit-story/">Christopher Stipp writes in Slashfilms:

this is a trailer that gets to the heart of what any struggling musician, who’s worth the effort, is doing in order to have their thumbtack placed on the map of great musical legends. I walked away from this inspired that no matter what happens, as long you keep fighting and struggling and making noise in order to be heard there’s bound to be someone listening.

Lag B’ Omer, this Sunday, May 22nd, is the most mystical day of the Jewish year – where you can light your inner fire. While there is still debate in the intellectual circles about the entire origin of the 33rd day and it’s bonfires, the people have spoken – they love it. Lag B’ Omer offers members of the tribe from all backgrounds and persuasions a chance to celebrate together the mystical and secret worlds of Kabbalah that he opened to the world. In LA, we do this at Dockweiler State Beach.

Join Jewlicious, JConnectLA and partners Haichal Moshe and hundreds of young Jews for bonfires, music, and games for the 8th Annual Massive 4xBonfire and Lag Ba’Omer festivities Bring your beach balls, footballs, racquets, sun-tan lotion, towels, surfboards, guitars, tambourines, bongos, saxophones, fiddles, drums for the drum circle, SPOONS (etc, you get the picture) so that we can jam and play together, around the fire, under the stars, on the beach, singing and yelling and mingling and mixing — does it get much better?

This event is completely FREE starting at 6, til the beach closes at 10.

There will be PLENTY of delicious food, including a cash BBQ, and a special appearance by LA’s only kosher schnitzel food truck, the Schnitzel Wagon!

MAKE SURE TO RSVP — SO YOU WILL BE UPDATED WITH THE EXACT PARTY LOCATION ON THE BEACH

We’ll send out a Facebook message w/ info of where EXACTLY we’ll be on the beach the day of so that you’ll know where to find us.

Klezmer Juice

Klezmer Juice is the real thing – vibrant Yiddish soul combined with youth and musical style. Bringing together some of L.A.’s finest musicians from all walks of life. While many of us associate this music with European immigration to the United States, Jews at the turn of the century were settling all parts of the Americas, and they and their descendents have a rich history in Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, and many other Latin American countries. Klezmer Juice bandleader and clarinet player Gustavo Bulgach was born and raised in one such community in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A part of the large and active Jewish community there, he learned Klezmer music from his family at a young age. Inspired by the religious and secular life of the Argentine community, Bulgach, who now lives in Los Angeles, has traveled around the globe, finding that Klezmer music is the “soundtrack of the Diaspora.” Bulgach has managed to forge a new klezmer sound with one ear to tradition and the other locked on the now.

Live At Stubb’s put Matisyahu on the map, creating a nation-wide following. In 2010 Matisyahu returned to Stubb’s, the place where his musical footprint was first established, and recorded a new live album.

In the time since the first Stubb’s album, Matisyahu has sprouted his wings and built a musical ecosystem way beyond anything that we could have imagined.

I have the privilege to be closely following Matisyahu, going to his shows, and experiencing his musical growth and journey. Even with front-row seat, I could have predicted how amazing this album would be. It’s not a greatest hits album, it’s not a nostalgia or revival album, its a shot across the bow of cookie-cutter corporate sameness and predictable genre-locked tonality. It’s a revolutionary album. Dub Trio and Matisyahu are brilliant, aerobic, agile, free flowing across the sky of sound and expressions. Live At Stubb’s 2 is the most compelling album of his career.

But you cannot listen to it once on little headphones or a laptop speaker system. To full appreciate Stubb’s 2 you need massive sound, three or more listenings, an an open mind. If you can line that up, your musical world will be totally grateful.

Gone are the soft reggae lines, the linear, the expected. Matisyahu’s sound is more intense, holistic, and full of unexpected twists, turns, and flips. Just try to catch your breath.

Matisyahu will be doing a massive tour this summer, starting next month in Alabama at Hang Out Festival. In addition to downloading Stubbs 2, hopefully you will have a chance to catch this incredible performer soon.

PS- We wish Tahlia and Matisyahu a hearty Mazal Tov on the birth of a baby boy!
