No, this is not going to be a post about the vacuousness found within certain quarters of the city by the sea. This is a post about a photo exhibition taking place at the Tel Aviv Opera. Titled “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” it is on display until December 13th. The exhibition features photos of world-class Jazz musicians performing at the Tel Aviv Opera but taken during the more intimate sound checks as opposed to the performance. But wait, that’s not all! Photographer Maya Hed, originally from Los Angeles, dispenses with the conventional jazz musician photography techniques:

Further, after enduring the black and white photography documentation of jazz music over the past years, Maya’s fresh approach presents a large amount of photographs in color in the belief that emotions and stage life , come to light better in her colorful menagerie outlook… The camera leads us behind the scenes with such luminaries as Stefano Bollani who overwhelmed Italian jazz culture, Tony Pancella who is a very important figure in Italian Jazz, and Nicola Stilo who played with one of jazz’s greatest artists, the notorious Chet Baker and many more.

From L to R, 1st photo: Wessell Anderson (U.S), Rosario Giuliani (Italy ), Robert Anchipolovsky (Russia/Israel ), 2nd photo: Tony Pancella (Italy). 3rd photo: Tokunbo Akinro (Germany)

There is going to be a Toast on Thursday, Nov. 24th at the Israeli Opera House Tel Aviv Performing Arts Center from 7 pm to 10 pm. The address is 19 Shaul Hamelech St. in Tel Aviv. There will be kosher wine, bubbly and snackies and Ms. Hed will be there as well. For more info you can contact Maya at mayahed@hotmail.com. So if you’re in Tel Aviv and not at some Thanksgiving thing, go! Otherwise check out the pics at the Tel Aviv Opera from Monday to Thursday 8:30 am to 8:00 pm, on Fridays from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm and during shows. But only till December 13th!

Some are a little too strong for my taste but when his work hits the spot, it hits the spot!

And the photos are for sale (image 1, image 2)!

The election is about to happen in the US and soon enough in Israel.

The economic forecasts stink.

All those smart men in DC managed to give away $250 billion dollars to banks that won’t lend it, thereby deepening the economic crisis they have given us. This, after receiving our hard-earned tax money to bail out their asses because they screwed up and did the opposite of what they were supposed to do as bankers. Brilliant!

But it’s shabbat. So, shabbat shalom!

Some photos look like the ones my brother took of us during our Birthright trip on Mt. Hermon, but a few clearly rise above the rest. Papo’s plan is to reveal the demanding compromise Israeli girls who choose the military route make: a 2 year interruption, albeit a necessary one to protect the State, takes it toll. That and a gun slung around a shoulder shouldn’t subtract any humanity from a soldier. I’m not saying they enhance it either, though hot chicks with sniper rifles are definitely making me feel pretty human right now.

Much thanks to Paolo Dy, a Filipino cinematographer who did us all a favor by putting The Hotties of the Israeli Army, the tachlis album for those of us whose time is short.

Do you want more Rachel Papo?!
